hela Sverige Luleå University of Technology is in strong growth with world-leading competence in several research areas. We shape the future through innovative education and ground-breaking research results, and based on the Arctic region, we create global social benefit. Our scientific and artistic research and education are conducted in close collaboration with international, national and regional companies, public actors and leading universities. Luleå University of Technology has a total turnover of SEK 1.9 billion per year. We currently have 1,840 employees and 17,670 students.
In the coming years, multi-billion investments will be made in large projects in Northern Sweden to create a fossil-free society both nationally and globally. Luleå University of Technology is involved in several of these cutting-edge research projects and in the societal transformation that they entail. We offer a broad range of courses and study programmes to match the skills in demand. We hope that you will help us to build the sustainable companies and societies of the future. The Engineering Materials subject at the department of Department of Engineering Science and Mathematics at Luleå University of Technology, is now looking for one PhD student. The research group currently consists of four senior researchers, two technicians, and ten doctoral students. The subject has a well-equipped laboratory for advanced material characterization and analysis of thermomechanical behavior. We also have access to nearby laboratories, for example for testing of mechanical properties.
Subject description
Engineering materials includes the field of material composition, structure, properties and production of materials - mainly metallic and ceramic - as well as application aspects.
Project description
The project FINAST (Research and Innovation in Norrbotten for Advanced Green Steel Production and Manufacturing) is an interdisciplinary research project financed by the Just Transition Fund and Tillväxtverket. FINAST contributes to the green transition and a carbon dioxide-neutral steel industry through research efforts in collaboration between Luleå University of Technology, Swerim and SSAB. The research activities are focused on both the process chain downstream from steel production and deal with fossil-free steel properties and performance, as well as fossil-free steel production with a focus on using hydrogen and bio-based raw materials.
As a PhD student in the FINAST project, you will work in an interdisciplinary research environment, in close collaboration with research institutes and industry, and contribute to the steel industry's conversion work towards carbon neutrality.
In this project, the focus is on low-carbon steel and its mechanical properties. With the right thermomechanical treatment, low-carbon steels have great potential for use in high-strength applications. In this project, as a PhD student, you will work with low-carbon steels, as well as development and understanding of mechanical properties. These include fatigue properties, and to get a clearer picture of what happens during the initiation of cracks. The project also intends to study different thermomechanical treatments to increase both fatigue properties and strength. The work takes place in collaboration with other research actors, such as, for example, the research subject Solid mechanics at LTU and Swerim's research institute.

Duties
Working as a doctoral student means great opportunities to define your own daily work tasks and how they are to be carried out. You will act and train as a project manager and this is combined with your own education (a doctoral student takes mandatory and voluntary doctoral courses) and development. In addition, you get to try out the role of teacher. A doctoral position also involves practice in scientific work in the form of publishing scientific articles in journals and at international conferences. Project planning and execution under own responsibility is also included as an important part of the doctoral student position.
Your qualifications
The doctoral student position requires a theoretical depth and an experimental interest. Material characterization is an important element of the position. We are looking for you with a master's degree in material engineering, mechanical engineering, engineering physics or equivalent. Particular emphasis is placed on knowledge of materials science. Previous knowledge of steel is advantageous.
We are looking for motivated and enthusiastic candidates with the ability to work independently as well as in a group. You must have good communication skills and be skilled in spoken and written English. Furthermore, a good ability to work independently and drive projects forward as well as to familiarize oneself with new issues is needed. Knowledge of Swedish is an advantage.
During the evaluation, special emphasis is placed on:
• Knowledge relevant to the current project
• The quality of the master thesis
• Personal characteristics relevant to research
For further information on doctoral education see, Syllabus for education in engineering materials.
