hela Sverige Umeå University - with its 29,000 students and over 4,000 employees – is an organisation in constant change and development. The university’s researchers carry out excellence within several areas of research, and many of them are among the world’s elite. We are one of Sweden’s largest providers of education and offer a broad and attractive range of courses and programmes. Our campus constitutes an inspiring environment for everyone that studies and works here. We wish to co-operate with companies and organisations throughout the Umeå region and all over the world.
PhD postion in Physics
The department of Physics has a staff of approximately 80 persons, 10 professors, 24 with a PhD degree, roughly 25 PhD students, a technical/administrative staff of about ten and some temporarily employed positions such as post docs. The main task for the department is research, education in research and undergraduate teaching. The department has active research in areas such as optical physics, condensed matter physics, plasma and space physics, and theoretical physics.
The Department of Physics and the research group in Nanophysics and Materials are seeking applicants for a PhD position. Our research is focused on different type of nanostructured carbon such as carbon nanotubes, fullerenes and different applications of these materials. Carbon nanotubes and fullerenes represent a group of materials that have received a huge amount of interest the last decade. They are attracting interest in several different sub areas in physics and chemistry such as nanophysics, material physics, condensed matter and nanoelectronics.
The planned research project involves synthesis of carbon nanotubes with Chemical Vapor Deposition and modification and characterization of carbon nanotubes and fullerene materials. Examples of characterization methods that will be used in the project are different types of spectroscopic methods, such as Raman spectroscopy and Infra red spectroscopy and various microscopic methods such as Transmission Electron Microscopy and Scanning Electron Microscopy.
The applicant should have appropriate education in Physics. The project will require the ability to build and develop experimental set-ups and therefore documented experience of experimental Physics is a requirement. Experience from synthesis methods of carbon nanotubes and experience of some of the above mentioned characterization methods are a merit. We also put large value in the applicant’s social abilities. The Ph.D. student needs to be skilled in both oral and written communication in English, be able to work independently as well as in collaboration with others. A PhD at the department of Physics will besides working with the research project also take part in the teaching at the department. This is normally done as a teacher or lab supervisor in some of the courses at the department.
