The European Spallation Source (ESS) is a partnership organization of 13 European member countries located in the city of Lund, Sweden. The ESS is hiring motivated and inspiring people from across the globe to design, construct and operate the world's most powerful neutron source. We seek collaborative, talented people in a range of fields who are excited about playing a part in the future of science in Europe.

About the role:

The ESS is at an exciting turning point. It is in transition from being a construction site, to being an operating facility. To help us realise our goal of being the most powerful neutron material research facility in the world, we are seeking to appoint an Instrument Scientist to join the Spectroscopy Division within the Science Directorate at ESS. You will work as an instrument scientist on the BIFROST instrument, an extreme environment cold spectrometer, with tasks that include:

Within the Bifrost team

• Ensure the successful completion of the Bifrost instrument project in close collaboration with the Bifrost team;
• Focus on the installation of sample environment, detector capabilities and data curation and analysis;
• Drive the instrument through cold and hot commissioning plans and into First Science;
• In the future - develop the operation in collaboration with the user community.

Within the spectroscopy division there are opportunities to

• Perform the planning, design, and evaluation of future instrumentation concepts through calculations, simulations and test-experiments.

Within the Science directorate you will be expected to

• Contribute to the development of relevant ESS support facilities and infrastructure.

As an instrument scientist we expect you to

• Conduct scientific or technical research and author scientific or technical publications;
• Establish and maintain constructive contacts with universities, laboratories and other relevant actors;
• Take part in peer review of scientific publications, grant proposals, research, and facilities;
• Represent ESS at appropriate conferences and workshops;
• Present scientific and technical research at the relevant conferences and workshops, and in seminars and lectures;
• Engage with the scientific community through involvement in standards groups, conference organization and professional bodies as appropriate;
• Supervise post docs and students and participate in teaching activities, as appropriate.

About you:

To thrive with us in the Spectroscopy Division, you need to be a self-motivated person who is keen to support an instrument team in order to get it ready for first neutrons. You should be a 'hands-on' person who is open to learn new things along the way.

First and foremost, we need someone who is suitably qualified and experienced. Ideally, this means a PhD in physical, chemical or materials sciences with research interests and a publication record aligned with the science case of the BIFROST instrument. Experience and technical interest in instrumentation and spectroscopy, preferably using time of flight techniques is a prerequisite for this role.

Any additional prior experience or knowledge working with neutron scattering instrumentation, data treatment and modelling at a level sufficient to guide the development of instrument specific software, programming experience - preferably in Python - or experience with neutron optics and Monte Carlo ray tracing simulations would be a distinct advantage.

We are building ESS from the ground up, so we need someone who is comfortable not only following procedures, but also creating them. We attach great importance to personality and attitude, so we're looking for a real team player: Someone who is sociable, has excellent communication skills, who likes to collaborate with different people and who is committed to helping this amazing project to realise its full potential. We need a hands-on self-starter who is able to work in a structured, orderly, responsible and - most importantly - safe way.

The working language of ESS is English but it would be great if you could also work in Swedish as well. For this role, we need someone who can start as soon as possible!

What can we offer?

Aside from the chance to work at truly unique big science project, you can also expect:

• An opportunity to contribute to the future discoveries within neutron science.
• Full relocation support if not already based in Sweden.
• A stunning, brand new workplace filled with innovative minds and brilliant people from across the globe.
• A challenging, innovative and stimulating work environment.
• Market competitive compensation that is individual and differentiated according to role, responsibilities, individual skills, abilities and achievements.
• 30 days of annual leave, as well as more than 10 days of public holiday and company days off or days with limited working hours.
• Monthly pension contributions on top of your salary.
• Flexible working arrangements and a real work-life balance.

If you see yourself in what we're looking for, please provide your CV and motivation letter in English by clicking on "apply" and following the instructions. Please be aware that we can only accept direct applications made via the ESS website.

Certain roles at ESS require health and safety checks and/or security clearance procedures, which will be performed as part of the recruitment process.
