hela Sverige Scania is undergoing a transformation from being a leading supplier of trucks, buses, and engines to providing complete and sustainable transport solutions. Together with TRATON and our sister brands MAN, Volkswagen Truck & Bus, and International, we are working to shape the future of mobility with innovative and environmentally conscious solutions. Our values - customer first, respect, team spirit, responsibility, and elimination of waste - are at the heart of everything we do. Together, we are at the forefront of creating a sustainable future.
Role Summary
Do you have a curious mind and want to embark on a journey that will expand your own as well as the boundaries of human knowledge, then an industrial PhD might be the thing for you. We are offering you a possibility to help to shape the emission system of our future hydrogen fuelled engines, literally making the world a cleaner place.
Hydrogen produced from renewable sources offers an alternative to battery electric trucks in certain applications, e.g. where long range and fast fueling are important features. The hydrogen could be used either in fuel cells, generating electricity, or directly in specially adapted internal combustion engines (H2-ICE). The latter is a comparatively mature technology which will be key factor for a fast implementation of hydrogen fuelled heavy trucks.
Nevertheless, the use of H2-ICE offers new challenges for the trucks' exhaust aftertreatment system, as temperatures and composition of the exhaust will differ from conventional fossil fuels. In the present project the focus is understanding and solving these challenges and your role as an industrial PhD student will be to explore the impact of the exhaust from H2-ICE on the performance and life-length of especially the de-NOX part of the system. This work will include both theoretical and practical work e.g. catalyst testing and characterisation.
The present position will be part of HyEATS (Hydrogen Exhaust Aftertreatment Systems), a joint project between catalyst company Johnson Matthey, Chalmers University of Technology, KTH Royal Institute of Technology and Scania as well as the Competence Center for Catalysis at Chalmers University of Technology. The PhD student will be employed by Scania CV AB and affiliated to the Division of Chemical Engineering at Chalmers University of Technology. Your time and location will be mainly at Scania, Södertälje, with some time spent at Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg.
As support you will have close contact with researchers both in academia and at Scania and the other industrial partners.
Job Responsibilities
You will be responsible for all the parts of a research project from coming up with ideas, designing experiments, writing scientific papers, and presenting your findings at international conferences.
You will do both theoretical and hands-on work in the laboratory as well as the use of advanced characterization techniques.
Being a PhD student offers a unique opportunity to deepen your knowledge within the exciting field of catalysis. Moreover, you will have contact with different experts both at Scania and Chalmers University of Technology as well with our external partners.
Who You Are
We are looking for you who want to work with catalysis and catalysts from a material technology perspective.
You are a person who sees research and science as something fun and you have a strong passion for learning new things. You should enjoy collaborating with other colleagues since our mission is very cross-functional. You should also have an interest in doing practical work in the lab, although hopefully that does not mean that you shy away from theoretical discussions and the use of computers.
You should have a M. Sc. degree in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Engineering Physics or similar. A condition for the position is that the applicant is approved as a PhD student, i.e. fulfil the basic requirements for doctoral studies at Chalmers University of Technology. You should have excellent writing and communication skills in English, additional language skills in Swedish is beneficial.
This Is Us
In the group EMEMC we study the chemistry of the truck in the areas of aftertreatment, fuel, oil and catalysis in present and future commercial vehicles. The use of hydrogen is a natural part of the work. We work with product follow-up, with research for the future and in the product development phase.
The group ENXPK develops catalysts and particulate filters in aftertreatment systems for truck and bus engines. Our work involves rig, engine, and vehicle testing. Necessary tests are designed and performed, test data is analyzed and presented to define optimized technology solutions. A curious mind is needed to understand customer needs and possibilities for the future. We work cross functional with colleagues responsible for design, installation, and controls as well as all major catalyst suppliers.
Scania Offers
We offer a dynamic, flexible workplace with hybrid work options, including Scania Sergel and Midway hubs. With a structured development plan and courses, Scania supports your career growth both locally and internationally.
Benefits include training at our health center Gröndal or wellness allowance, result bonus, flexible hours, and company car leasing. Scania also hosts events for employees and their families, and Stockholm residents enjoy direct access to Södertälje via Scania Job express buses.
Application
Your application should include a CV and any relevant certificates. We welcome all applicants and strive for diversity in our recruitment processes.
Apply as soon as possible, no later than 2025-03-27. Screening will take place on an ongoing basis during the application period. Logical and personality tests may be used as part of the selection process, and a background check may be required for this role.
