The European Spallation Source (ESS) is one of the largest science and technology infrastructure projects being built today. Our goal is to become the brightest source of neutrons for science and technology and be operational by the end of this decade. A state of the art suite of neutron scattering instruments will be made available to address a wide range of scientific fields in fundamental and materials science. Powered by the world's most advanced linear proton accelerator, ESS will enable cutting-edge research in materials science, energy, health, and the environment for decades to come.

Join us in shaping the future of science - from the ground up.

About the role:

Within the Science Directorate of ESS, the Scientific Support Division provides the ESS neutron science progam with experimental support with sample environments, user laboratories, deuteration, and hall coordination in close collaboration with the Instrument Divisions.

We are now seeking to appoint a Group Leader to steer the newly formed Hall Coordination group at ESS. The Hall Coordination group will support the neutron science programme by providing 24/7 technical support in the experimental halls and adjacent laboratory buildings during neutron production days, as well as supporting general facility maintenance, coordination of activities in the experimental halls, and upgrade programs during shutdown periods.

As the Hall Coordination group leader you will occupy a key position as the main point of coordination between the neutron science program in the experimental halls and the main control room and machine operations. You will also collaborate closely with facility management, ESH&S (Environment, Safety, Health & Security) on ensuring safety in the experimental areas.

Through leading the team responsible for providing technical and operational support across the neutron experimental halls at ESS, you must ultimately ensure that daily operations run smoothly, safely, and efficiently - while enabling seamless support for the scientific user programme.

Day-to-day, you will:

• Build, train, and manage the hall coordination team, with a focus on teamwork, performance, and safety.
• Plan and deliver 3-shift support during neutron production days.
• Coordinate the transition of the halls from construction to full operation, in close collaboration with instrument installation teams.
• Act as the primary liaison between the experimental halls and the Main Control Room.
• Lead daily hall meetings, maintaining a strong safety culture, and overseeing day-to-day coordination of activities.
• Manage the experiment hall coordination efforts, including maintenance during shutdown periods and cross-team collaboration with Facility Management and other technical groups.
• Promote open communication and contributing to the professional growth of team members through training and feedback.

This is a full-time, permanent position based at the ESS Campus in Lund, Sweden. The position includes being part of ESS Crisis Organisation as a First Responder, which requires passing a security check, treadmill test to handle breathing apparatus and an annual medical check-up."

About you:

Our ideal candidate is a confident, service-minded professional with a natural talent for leading teams and coordinating complex technical support for world-class scientific research. Whether you're managing people, systems, or resources, you bring structure, clarity, and reliability to everything you do - always with a focus on safety, efficiency, and user support.

You have a bachelor's degree in engineering, physics, or a related field. However, equivalent expertise through extensive hands-on experience in technical services is also acceptable for this role. You've worked in fast-paced, multidisciplinary environments, ideally within a research infrastructure or large-scale technical facility, where you've led teams, supported scientists, and ensured the seamless delivery of operations.

You're a natural coordinator who is skilled at managing technicians, integrating services across departments, and liaising with both internal stakeholders and external providers. You understand the unique demands of shared experimental areas and have a keen eye for ensuring operational readiness, equipment upkeep, and a strong safety culture. You're proactive when it comes to identifying risks, solving problems, planning work, and responding to unexpected challenges, including emergency situations.

Experience in radiological, chemical, or high-hazard environments is a strong asset, as is any background supporting 24/7 operations or experiment hall coordination at research facilities. You are someone who can remain calm under pressure, bring a collaborative mindset, and who has an unwavering commitment to enabling great science through great support.

To apply:

A career at ESS gives you the opportunity to contribute to the future discoveries within neutron science at a stunning, brand-new workplace filled with innovative minds and brilliant people from across the globe. We offer market competitive, individualised compensation which is differentiated according to role, responsibilities, individual skills, abilities and achievements as well as monthly pension contributions on top of your salary.
