U 2012/38
Autistic eating disturbances in individuals with autism spectrum disorders, anorexia nervosa and a twin population
Application deadline: 2012-02-09
Description of the research project
Which eating disturbances (EDs) occur among individuals with normal intelligence and autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and how do these EDs affect their daily living? How common are the autistic EDs in individuals with anorexia nervosa (AN) and in a twin population?
An ED questionnaire, The SWedish Eating Assessment for Autism spectrum disorders (SWEAA), for individuals with normal intelligence and ASD, has been developed and will be validated (internal and external validity). It has been administered to young adults with ASD and matched healthy controls. SWEAA will also be used with AN patients. In a qualitative study, young adults with ASD will be interviewed pertaining to how they perceive their ED and how it affects their daily living. The prevalence of selective eating (SE), a typical "autistic ED", has systematically been investigated in a twin cohort (CATSS) among 9-year-old children. The occurrence of SE will be compared between twins with and without ASD.
Preliminary results indicate that SWEAA has good reliability and validity.
EDs in ASD are clinically a big issue, and can lead to complications such as underweight and obesity. By using SWEAA the possibility to diagnose EDs will increase and accordingly complications can be prevented. Individuals with ASD and co-morbid AN are a growing problem at special units for EDs. These individuals do not tend to benefit from standard treatment and are at risk of becoming chronic AN cases.
It is desired that the applicant has a background as a clinical psychologist with experience of child neuropsychiatry, eating disorders and validation of psychiatric instruments, but not a prerequisite.
