Communicative interaction and intervention in neurogenic speech and language disorders
Application deadline: 2010-12-08
Description of the research project
Every year thousands of people in Sweden suffer from brain damage, such as stroke or Parkinson s disease, affecting their ability to use speech and language. When communication is affected due to a speech or language disorder, it has consequences for the conversation partners, as well as for the neurologically impaired individual. There is a need to develop methods improving the basic conditions for participation and quality of life for communicatively impaired individuals and their conversations partners. Due to the demographic development in the western world with the rising average lifetime, affecting demands on medical services and rehabilitation, this is an area where research is urgently needed.
The present PhD-project aim to study:
• The effect of repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation on language aspect such as naming, connected speech, and conversation ability in individuals with aphasia.
• The impact of two different types of neurogenic speech and language disorders (aphasia after stroke, and dysarthria due to Parkinson's disease) on important aspects of conversational interaction including repair, turn-taking, and topic management.
• The effect of communication partner training on everyday conversations in individuals with aphasia or dysarthria and their significant others.
• The effect of communication partner training on everyday conversations in individuals with aphasia or dysarthria and professional carers.
The project will increase our understanding of how conversation ability is affected by neurological diseases, and it will be the basis for development of relevant communication intervention and support for people with brain injuries as well as for their interlocutors.
