The research activities within the Department of Biology and Environmental Science include the areas of aquatic ecology, cell and organism biology, evolutionary biology, microbiology, environmental science and environmental engineering as well as zoonotic ecology.
Project title: Microbiology of Baltic Sea Sediments
The research project will investigate the microorganisms present in Baltic Sea sediments in relation to changing oxygen concentrations and climate change.
The project will use high throughput nucleic acid sequencing to link the microorganisms present, their metabolic capabilities, and the processes they carry out in response to changing environmental conditions and how this affects nutrient fluxes.
Applicants should have completed courses equaling at least 240 higher education credits (ETCS), of which at least 60 are at the second-cycle level in a related field, or may have principally equivalent knowledge acquired in Sweden or abroad. In addition, the student should have completed a 30 credits independent project work (thesis) in a related field and have a high proficiency in written and spoken English. Basic requirements for post-graduate studies are laid out in the Swedish Higher Education Ordinance (Högskoleförordningen), Chapter 7.
Assessment criteria will take into account documented evidence of research in 'omics', sampling of aquatic environments, and measurement of nutrient fluxes plus personal qualities such as creativity, problem-solving ability, and being a good team-worker.
The PhD studies are limited to 4 years (100%) but may be extended to 5 years through teaching at the undergraduate level.
Successful completion of the post-graduate studies will lead to a PhD in Ecology with emphasis in microbiology. The employment is planned to
start on January 1st or as sson as possible thereafter.
