Our goal is to become the brightest source of neutrons for science and technology and be operational by the end of this decade. Powered by the world's most advanced linear proton accelerator, ESS will enable cutting-edge research in materials science, energy, health, and the environment for decades to come.
Join us in shaping the future of science - from the ground up.
About the role
As a major research infrastructure project within the European Union, ESS enjoys very strong interest from the public, media, industry the scientific community and other research facilities. To help us engage these audiences in our mission of being the most powerful accelerator-based neutron source in the world, we are looking for a forward-thinking and experienced Digital Communications Officer.
Reporting directly to the Head of Communications and Engagement, you will lead the development and management of ESS' digital communication channels: websites, social media and newsletters. You will collaborate closely with colleagues in the team, as well as other relevant internal and external stakeholders to contribute to the development, implementation and evolution of a content strategy for all channels and key target groups.
Day-to-day, you will:
• Oversee overall content planning of the ESS website and current social media channels (LinkedIn, Instagram, and YouTube), in line with the ESS Communications and Engagement Strategy.
• Provide strategic input towards future developments of existing and new digital channels, adapted to ESS priorities, audience characteristics and meeting international standards.
• Develop and deliver high-quality written, photo, video and graphic content for ESS digital channels.
• Lead the analysis of metrics across all digital channels, translating them into insights and KPI's to inform strategic priorities and plans for communications and engagement at ESS.
• Collaborate closely with a wide range of relevant stakeholders, both internally and externally, to source and develop content and new channels whenever relevant.
• Manage relationships with the providers of systems, tools and infrastructure for digital channel management and content monitoring.
This is a full-time, permanent position based at the ESS Campus in Lund, Sweden.
About you:
First and foremost, we need a team player who is suitably qualified and experienced in the field of content and digital channel management. This means that you will have a master's degree in communications science, digital media, digital marketing or science communication, as well as at least 3 years' prior experience in a digital communications role in an established organisation. You must be a creative and forward-thinking digital communications professional with a passion for engaging audiences through cutting-edge tools and strategies.
You bring strong expertise in managing digital channels, producing high-quality multimedia content, and designing data-driven campaigns that align with organisational priorities. Your experience in the delivery of impactful content across platforms, measuring results, and continuously evolving strategies to optimise engagement gives you the insight needed to plan and structure your work independently, whilst at the same time being able to collaborate and deliver as a member of the team.
For this role, we need someone who is professionally fluent in written and spoken English, and who also has a good understanding of Swedish. Excellent writing skills are essential. Your ability to manage and create for digital platforms, including websites, social media, and newsletters, is complemented by a technical familiarity with tools such as content management systems (e.g. Drupal, WordPress), social media scheduling tools (e.g., Hootsuite, Buffer), and analytics platforms (e.g., Google Analytics, native social media reporting). Experience with SEO optimisation, graphic design software (e.g., Adobe Creative Suite), basic video editing tools (e.g., Premiere Pro, Final Cut), and working knowledge of HTML and CSS is highly desirable.
As an individual, you value diversity in every form and thrive in an international environment. You should enjoy navigating both the academic and industry worlds, identifying opportunities for effective and efficient communications. Believing in team delivery, you celebrate successes and embrace learnings together with your colleagues.
