The European Spallation Source (ESS) is one of the largest science and technology infrastructure projects being built today. Our goal is to become the brightest source of neutrons for science and technology and be operational by the end of this decade. A state of the art suite of neutron scattering instruments will be made available to address a wide range of scientific fields in fundamental and materials science. Powered by the world's most advanced linear proton accelerator, ESS will enable cutting-edge research in materials science, energy, health, and the environment for decades to come.

Join us in shaping the future of science - from the ground up.

About the role:

The Scientific Support Division at ESS is looking for an Deuteration Chemist to support the ESS neutron user program. The Deuteration group at ESS operates a support laboratory for scientific users of the ESS neutron instruments with a focus on providing deuterium-labelled samples via both chemical synthesis and biological deuteration in cell cultures. We support scientists from material, life science and soft matter communities using a broad range neutron scattering techniques.

In this role, you'll play an important role in the synthesis of a range of deuterated molecules requested by ESS users as well as method development for chemical deuteration and collaboration with other international deuteration laboratories on chemical deuteration methods.

Day-to-day, you will:

• Execute projects as part of deuteration services for neutron experiment users, including the production, purification and characterization of organic molecules through a variety of synthesis routes and analytical methods.
• Maintain and operate the chemical deuteration laboratory at ESS, in collaboration with the Support Laboratories group.
• Contribute to the planning, organization and operation of deuteration services including proposal calls for deuteration, feasibility reviews and proposal work scheduling.
• Participate in scientific collaborations with internal and external stakeholders and contribute to publications in peer-reviewed journals and conference proceedings.

This is a full-time, permanent position based at the ESS Campus in Lund, Sweden.

About you:

We're seeking an experienced and highly motivated synthetic organic chemist with a PhD and a strong track record of custom synthesis for research use, scientific publications, and practical problem-solving. In addition to designing synthetic pathways and optimising purification methods, you also bring deep expertise in modern analytical techniques - including NMR, HPLC, MS, LCMS, GCMS, UV-Vis, and IR.

You take pride in delivering reliable results on time, and you thrive in both independent and collaborative settings. Comfortable working across disciplines, you bring a proactive mindset and an eagerness to contribute to a fast-paced, international research environment. Communicating clearly in English - both written and spoken - comes naturally to you, and you're confident engaging with colleagues from a wide range of technical backgrounds.

If you've worked with deuteration or hydrogen/deuterium exchange reactions, that's a strong advantage. So is experience operating pressure vessels or Parr reactors, scouting novel synthetic routes, or supporting user-driven synthesis in research or contract environments. You're someone who wants to contribute to the bigger picture - not just the chemistry, but also the critical importance of lab safety, shared infrastructure, and keeping instruments in top condition. Most importantly, you bring curiosity, scientific rigour, and a team-oriented spirit to everything you do.

To apply:

A career at ESS gives you the opportunity to contribute to the future discoveries within neutron science at a stunning, brand-new workplace filled with innovative minds and brilliant people from across the globe. We offer market competitive, individualised compensation which is differentiated according to role, responsibilities, individual skills, abilities and achievements as well as monthly pension contributions on top of your salary.

If you see yourself in what we're looking for, please provide your CV and motivation letter in English by clicking on "apply" and following the instructions. Please be aware that we can only accept direct applications made via the ESS website. Submit your application as soon as you can and quote the job reference number ESD-68099 in your application.

This role requires additional background screening processes and health and safety checks, which will be performed during the recruitment process.
