Description of directorate / division / group
During ESS construction, SAD is responsible for the scientific support laboratories, sample environment and user office. In this SAD helps setting the policies on designing, building and operating a science driven experimental facility.
Within ESS the Deuteration and Macromolecular Crystallisation Platform (DEMAX) is responsible for the development and optimization of the production, characterization of deuterated compounds for experiments to be carried out on the ESS neutron scattering instrumentation. The platform consists of facilities for biological and chemical deuterationas well as for macromolecular crystallization.
Description of main responsibilities
The deuteration chemist will work on the synthesis, purification and characterization of deuterated organic molecules and their pre-cursors using a range of chemical, biochemical and analytical methods. A solid background in organic synthesis with experience of liquid and gas chromatography as well as NMR characterisation is required. In addition to a broad range of synthetic methods, experience of enzymatic and chiral synthesis and/or purification of small molecules from cell cultures would be desirable as well as experience of mass spectroscopy and isotopic labeling. His / Her duties and responsibilities include:
• setting up and operation of a laboratory for the production and purification of deuterated chemicals using novel and traditional synthesis routes
• characterisation of deuterated products using NMR and mass spectroscopy
• chromatographic purification, separation and analysis (TLC, HPLC, GC)
• day-to day responsibility for purchasing, equipment maintenance, calibration and other quality and safety functions for chemical deuteration
• contributing to coordinating a user platform for chemical deuteration
• contributing to journal and conference publications as appropriate
• contributing to the deliverables of the EU funded project SINE2020.
Required qualifications:
You have a PhD in synthetic organic chemistry using a range of synthetic and analytical methods, for example in the area of natural products. Post-doctoral experience and experience of deuterium labeling / neutron scattering / NMR methods will be considered an advantage.
At ESS it will be as important to be able to work independently and push the work forward as it will be needed to function well in international teams. The ability to work both independently and as part of a team is required and so are excellent time-management and organizational skills. A pro-active way of working and excellent communication skills are essential. Equally important are excellent skills in interacting with people and working collaboratively with people from different scientific disciplines in a continuously changing workplace. Preference will be given to candidates with hands-on experience from existing facilities.
The evaluation will be based on your technical / scientific qualifications. However, it is also important that you recognize the value of consulting others in order to succeed in meeting stakeholder expectations. A multi-faceted development project such as this requires excellent prioritization and time-management skills, and the ability to adapt to changing circumstances. Working in an international environment will challenge your ability to handle cultural diversity, and therefore it is important that you have successfully managed this in previous employments. Experience of working in an international environment is essential and we expect you to be fluent in written and spoken English, knowledge of Swedish or other European languages would be an advantage.
As a person you are positive, open minded, creative, organized and motivated. You are able to cope with projects in development, which can involve changing project directions and timeframes. To make all interests meet, you listen to input from others, whilst still being able to make decisions.
