SLU is seeking a database administrator and programmer to work at the Interbull Centre, in the SLU Ultuna campus, Uppsala. The Interbull Centre is a section of the Department of
Animal Breeding and Genetics of SLU that provides international genetic evaluation of dairy cattle to 30 different countries on behalf of the International Committee for Animal
Recording (ICAR). A database to handle over 4 million animal pedigrees and phenotypes is currently under development and it will probably be expanded to handle bovine genotypes in the near future. The Interbull Centre staff includes mainly geneticists who deal with statistical packages and tailored programs that run in Linux servers. More information about

Duties: The interbull Centre needs local expertise to optimize the settings of the database (software and hardware) as well as a programmer who are able to improve and develop program packages within the area of genetics. Responsibilities include support for system development, optimization of database performance, maintenance of functionalities already
implemented, setting and maintenance of Linux environments and support for internal and external users. The working language at the Interbull Centre is English.
Qualifications: The successful candidate will be trained and experienced in programming and databases. It is an advantage to have experience creating websites and web tools. Knowledge on Linux, Python, Fortran and PostgreSQL is a plus. Social ability, good communication skills and willingness to be part of a team is essential. The job requires organization to follow work plans, to produce comprehensive documentation and to communicate progress with the system users. Experience dealing with agriculture related data bases would be appreciated.
