hela Sverige at the Department of biochemistry and biophysics. Closing date: 20 September 2023.
The Science for Life Laboratory (SciLifeLab) is a national center for molecular biosciences with focus on health and environmental research. The combination of the highly interdisciplinary expertise and research projects at the department is unique in Sweden and also at an international level. This expertise ranges across cell biology, biochemistry, biophysics and theory.
The National School of Research in Natural Sciences pedagogical development work has focused on improving DBB's MS-level Bioinformatics course. Techniques implemented include flipped-classroom teaching, video lectures, Learning Management Systems, automated quizzes, and laboratory exercise virtualization. Substantive hardware and software resources and tecniques have been assembled. Pass rate and student satisfaction have increased. However the goal to create a Massively Open Online Course (MOOC) in Bioinformatics has still not been reached. We also aim to publish our pedagogical techniques and teaching materials. We now plan to co-apply for continuation funding from multiple sources, through the Global Bioinformatics Center at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU).
Current research areas include the application of Deep Learning to RNA structure prediction in collaboration with the Arne Elofsson group. We also develop accurate model building techniques for viral genomes using low-resolution density maps, e.g. from Cryo Electron Microscopy. The viral genome project is a collaboration with the Jií erný and Pavel Plevka groups from the Czech Republic
Main responsibilities
We are looking for a Bioinformatician who will evaluate, document, and improve bioinformatics teaching techniques, and in particular create a Massively Open Online Course (MOOC) in Bioinformatics. The work should be published in a pedagogical or suitable subject journal. There is also a possibility to give selected lectures in MS-level Bioinformatics within the Bioinformatician's areas of expertise.
If time allows, the Bioinformatician may also participate in scientific research. Therefore, research credentials in computational structural biology, nucleic acid structure, machine learning (especially deep learning), and/or 2D and 3D macromolecular structure prediction are considered an important secondary merit.
Qualification requirements
• PhD in Bioinformatics, Computer Science, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Biomedical Science, Biotechnology, Science Education or similar discipline
• Scientific publications in the previously named areas of Computational Biology or in the pedagogical literature
• Previous teaching experience, teacher training courses, or other evidence of pedagogical interests
• Evidence of responsibility, flexibility, and teamwork, as well as patience, e.g. with students.
As a person you should be responsible, flexible and a teamplayer. Since you will work with students it is important that you are patient. Great emphasis will ge be given to personal suitability.
The following is not required but may strengthen your application:
• Programming skills, e.g. in C++ or Python
• 3D molecular modeling and simulation skills.
