hela Sverige The University of Gothenburg tackles society's challenges with diverse knowledge. 53 500 students and 6 500 employees make the university a large and inspiring place to work and study. Strong research and attractive study programmes attract scientists and students from around the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, the University contributes to a better future.
The Institute of Biomedicine is involved in both research and education. In both of these areas, we focus on fundamental knowledge of the living cell - what it consists of, how it works, how its function is directed by the genetic material, and how it interacts with various kinds of micro-organisms. Using this knowledge, we try to elucidate the causes of diseases, and find new ways to diagnose and treat them.
The Institute is composed of the following four departments:
• The Department of Infectious Diseases
• The Department of Microbiology and Immunology
• The Department of Medical Biochemistry and Cell Biology
• The Department of Laboratory Medicine
At present, the institute has about 360 employees and approximately 440 million SEK in total assets.
Job assignments
Microbiological cultivation and handling of pathogenic - Risk-Group 2 - bacterial species. Optimize genomic DNA extractions and purifications, applicable for different NGS DNA sequencing platforms, with focus on Oxford Nanopore Minion genomic DNA sequencing. Genome sequence determinations of AMR bacteria, using Illumina short-read DNA sequencing and Oxford Nanopore long-read DNA sequencing platforms. Genome sequence data assembly, particularly assembly of Illumina-Oxford Nanopore hybrid assembly, annotation and comparative genomic analyses. Optimize surface- and whole-cell protein extractions and purifications, applicable for Mass Spectrometry-based "proteotyping" analyses of bacterial strains. Proteotyping peptide sequencing and identification through matching to whole-genome sequence data. Genome and Proteome data analyses of peptide and protein biomarkers of AMR and virulence through extensive database searching. Participate in the preparation of manuscripts for publication in English-language peer-review journals and presentations at international workshops and conferences. Participate in preparations of applications for external funding for continued research. Interact with Research Scientist, Postdoctoral Researcher and Technician, as well as students and visiting researchers, within a research group setting.
Qualifications
Required qualifications: MS or MSc degree in Biology from an accredited university with proficiency in written and spoken English. At least 5 year's laboratory experience, including handling and cultivation of bacteria. Good experience in DNA extraction and purification in preparation for DNA sequencing. Expertise with different genomic DNA sequencing platforms. Experience working with DNA sequence data. Erharenhet working with bacterial samples for proteomics analyses.
Desired qualifications: Experience in working with pathogenic bacterial species (Risk Group 2) and with antibiotic resistant bacteria. Laboratory experience including the handling and cultivating of bacteria, particularly pathogenic (Risk-Group 2) species, genomics and proteomics analyses of antibiotic resistance. Experience in bacterial taxonomy and characterization of novel taxa. Familiarity with identification and phylogenetic analyses of bacteria by comparative DNA sequence data and meta-genomic analyses of microbial communities and consortia. Experience with qualitative and quantitative proteomics.
The successful candidate will be organized and flexible with capacity to work independently within a group focused on microbial genomics and proteomics.
