The Department of Laboratory Medicine consists of 9 divisions and is active in many areas of Laboratory Medicine. The department is involved in advanced basic scientific, clinical and epidemiological research. The department is one of the largest departments of education at Karolinska Institutet.



Division
A position for an assistant professor in experimental nephrology is available in the laboratory of Dr.

Jaakko Patrakka at Karolinska Institute (KI) / AstraZeneca (AZ) Integrated Cardio Metabolic Centre (ICMC), Stockholm, Sweden. ICMC represents a unique opportunity for academic researchers to collaborate with scientists from the pharmaceutical industry to make cutting edge science and discover the next generation of medicines. The focus of the project is to explore molecular mechanisms behind glomerular diseases, with special emphasis on diabetic nephropathy. The ultimate goal is, in collaboration with AstraZeneca, to identify novel therapeutical targets and to develop new pharmaceutical compounds to treat kidney disease. We perform high throughput molecular profiling of human kidney biopsies and use primarily mouse and cell culture as experimental models.

Duties
We are seeking enthusiastic applicants who are experienced in working with human and mouse kidney tissue. Previous experience in isolating and culturing renal podocyte cells is required. Experience with phenotyping kidney mouse models is also a necessity. Moreover, the candidate should be familiar with induction of different glomerular disease models in mouse. Candidates should have a proven publication record. The selected candidate will work as part of a team, in close collaboration with postdocs and graduate students.

Entry requirements
A person is eligible to be appointed Assistant professor if he or she has been awarded a Degree of Doctor or has achieved the corresponding scientific competence. The persons appointed should primarily be the ones who have been granted a Degree of Doctor or have reached the corresponding competence no more than seven years before the end of the application period. Applicants must have a postdoc experience in an experimental kidney research lab.

An Assistant professor position is a fixed-term position. Initial contract will be for 24 months with an option for a prolongation.
