Background
The pressure on manufacturing companies to lower their CO2 emissions has never been higher and is constantly increasing. Being a manufacturing company that produces end products that contributes even further to the CO2 emissions (tail pipe emissions) is even higher. Being a company like Volvo Cars with a purpose and goal to be a leader within the automotive business at sustainability and environmental sustainability, with a goal to lower our CO2 footprint with 40% until 2025, makes this aspect one of our company's top priorities in every decision we make. To be able to take the best decisions we need to have 100% control over all our processes and operations to be able to measure the impact on the decisions we take from environmental sustainability perspective. From our suppliers that supplies material to our factories to the end of life of the car.
Part Supply and Logistics
Part supply and logistics manages our aftermarket business i.e. the full supply chain from spare part and accessories suppliers to our approx. 2500 dealers worldwide. This is an extremely challenging supply chain to monitor, that involves thousands of external suppliers, transport companies and 3PL companies. In our supply chain we operate 55 warehouses globally, some of them owned by VCC but the gross part is contracted through our 3PL partners. We have 3 central distribution centres, one in Gothenburg (SE), one in Shanghai (CN) and one in Rutherford (US) that supplies our 52 local distribution centres around the world.
Scope and outcome
It's easy to think that a lot of our CO2 footprint will be cut when moving from away combustion engines to electrical drive trains. This is in fact correct but unfortunately, it's far from what we need to do in order to reach our goal on 40% decrease in CO2 emissions by 2025. We need to identify a lot of other impact areas and actions within our operations, both internal and bought services, in order to lower our CO2 footprint and reach our goal.
What we need your help with is to create a full picture of our (PS&L) operation and its impact on the CO2 footprint and create a tool that supports us in taking sustainable decisions. By visualising which areas of our supply chain contributes most to our CO2 emissions, where you see the highest potential in lowering the emissions and how.
By helping us with this you will get a great insight in the automotive aftermarket business and the supply chain of a truly global company. You will also get a good opportunity to learn a great deal about the challenges and opportunities for a manufacturing company that strives towards a climate neural business.
Do you fit the profile?
We are looking for a candidate that studies Industrial Economy or similar with focus on logistics and or sustainability. You have preferably some knowledge about the automotive industry and its challenges within this area. We see that you have a big interest and passion about the climate debate.
Duration:
* Proposed starting date: January 2021, Period: 1 semester (approx. 20 weeks)
* Academic Credits: Equivalent to 30 ECTS
* Number of students: Suitable for 1-2 students.
