Senior Lecturer in clinical pharmacology and evidence-based medicine combined with employment as specialist/senior consultant
Ref PAR 2023/848
The University of Gothenburg tackles society's challenges with diverse knowledge. 56 000 students and 6 600 employees make the university a large and inspiring place to work and study. Strong research and attractive study programmes attract scientists and students from around the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, the University contributes to a better future.
Welcome to the Institute of Medicine. We conduct interdisciplinary research and education that spans from molecule to society, in close collaboration with healthcare providers in Region Västra Götaland and at Sahlgrenska University Hospital. Research within the institute includes many diseases with profound impacts on society, including osteoporosis; diabetes and obesity; as well as blood diseases; hormonal diseases; rheumatic diseases; allergies and asthma; diseases of the liver, stomach and intestines; and nutritional health. Much of our teaching takes place in the medical program, the dietician program and in public and global health.
The Health Technology Assessment (HTA) Center is a support organization for Region Västra Götaland tasked with scientifically evaluating methods and technologies in healthcare and summarizing these in HTA reports. These reports form the decision-making basis for the introduction and implementation of healthcare practices.
We are now recruiting a university lecturer with joint employment in clinical pharmacology.
Subject area
Clinical pharmacology and evidence-based medicine
Subject area description
Pharmaceutical therapy is one of the cornerstones of modern medicine. Extensive pharmacological research - from the molecular level to clinical studies - has contributed to an ever-growing number of available drug therapies. It is important that universities contribute to research into drug effects and the development of new drugs. To provide effective treatment, medical students, doctors and other professional groups must have accurate and up-to-date knowledge of the mechanisms of action, pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics, as well as an understanding of why drug effects can vary between patients.
The Institute of Medicine and Sahlgrenska University Hospital uphold the principles of evidence-based medicine (EBM), including systematic reviews of the scientific publications on pharmaceuticals, methods and technologies in healthcare. In light of the enormous number of scientific articles published each year, competence and proficiency in EBM are essential to be able to review, interpret and compile individual studies. This knowledge forms the basis for national and regional medical guidelines, which can be used for follow-up and decision support when revising existing protocols, for example in consideration for possible discontinuation of treatment.
Duties
The position includes teaching in the medical program, preferably in clinical pharmacology, but also participation in course management of the internal medicine module, teaching and supervision of students on degree work, and participation in training students in evidence-based medicine (EBM) and in clinical trials. Other supervision and teaching may also be included.
The position also includes conducting research following one's own research program, with relevance to the subject area of employment. The successful applicant is also expected to seek external research funding both as the principal applicant and as part of other research groups in order to build and maintain one's own research group.
The assignment may include collaboration with the Health Technology Assessment (HTA) Center at Sahlgrenska University Hospital.
Clinical duties will be carried out within the framework of combined employment as a specialist physician/senior physician, in agreement with the hospital. In addition to implementing accurate and up-to-date knowledge of mechanisms of action, pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics in clinical practice, duties also include prescription support, cost-benefit analysis of drug treatment, supervision and training of ST doctors and specialist doctors in clinical pharmacology.
Some administration related to teaching, research and clinical duties is also included in the position. The successful applicant will also be responsible for taking part in joint collegial assignments within the department.
Eligibility
The eligibility criteria for employing teaching staff are set out in Chapter 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance and in the Appointment Procedure for Teaching Posts at the University of Gothenburg.
According to the Higher Education Act, Chapter 3, Section 8, joint employment may only be held by a person who meets the eligibility requirements for both positions.

A completed doctoral degree in a medical subject or another subject that the employer deems equivalent, demonstrated teaching skills, medical degree and specialist competence in clinical pharmacology are required. It is also a requirement to be able to teach in one of the Scandinavian languages and English.
In accordance with the National Board of Health and Welfare, applicants must have the necessary knowledge of Swedish, Danish or Norwegian required to obtain a Swedish medical license.
