Electrical design engineers develop the next-generation technologies in HVDC (High Voltage Direct Current, 100-800kV) that that enable to transmit electricity over long distances & via submarine cables. As an electrical design engineer, you will work in our R&D organization on a specific development project critical to Hitachi Energy needs with opportunities to switch teams and projects as you and our fast-paced business grow and evolve.
The direct current technology has enabled the connection of renewable energy such as large offshore wind, remote solar generators to the grid and brings clean energy to large cities. Energy storage (like Supercapacitors or Lithium-Ion Battery systems) are a natural next step to support the electrical power network in the future and keep our grid stable as increased renewables are connected, and conventional rotating generators are decommissioned.
Our team is a part of Hitachi Energy's Technology & Solutions Development in Ludvika, Sweden, and is responsible worldwide for the development of semiconductor-based converter valves for HVDC and Static Var Compensation applications. Our department has around thirty employees from all around the globe, focus is mainly on electrical and mechanical design, and works in close collaboration with the global HVDC organization, including our Research centres worldwide. We are looking for engineers who bring fresh and innovative ideas to make the power grid greener and smarter, as we continue to push the technology forward.
We are now looking for an electrical engineer with extensive experience in battery energy storage systems, who can help us to integrate supercapacitors or battery storage systems into our converter valves, the semiconductor power electronic building block used to create our multilevel converter for 100-800kVdc power transmission.
Your responsibilities
You live Hitachi's core values of safety and integrity, which means taking responsibility for your own actions while caring for your colleagues and the business.
You will be part of a strong team working in an agile way, like to work hands-on and "make things happen", and are ready to take ownership of both technology and your personal development.
Your role will be to perform the following tasks for the Energy Storage System development:
Design battery systems in association to PE converter, including BMS and control strategy.
Dive into the latest developments in battery technology to find the best technical fit for our needs and select and assess battery cells fitting the application.
Apply advanced simulation tools for lifetime calculation and use them to survey and validate sophisticated designs.
Identify key partners for cells integration into modules or complete battery packs.
Identify key partners for advanced cooling designs and innovative DC protection concepts.
Initiate collaborative development with suppliers whenever needed and participate in suppliers' audits and qualifications together with our supply chain management teams.
Participate in commercial negotiations. Drive ESS total cost of ownership.
Monitor sub-contractor activities, including co-design, manufacturing, testing & certification.
Create detailed tests plan & well-structured test reports. Define acceptance criteria and test equipment requirements, including evaluation of internal or external lab facilities. Lead and participate in test activities, from low-scale lab experiments up to full-scale ESS type tests.
Lead hazard & risks analyses, FMECA (HW & SW), and identify potential unsafe scenarios. Support the teams in defining and executing risk mitigation plans to achieve a safe system design.
Generate intellectual property & write publications.

Your background
Bachelor of Science in Electrical/Electronic Engineering or related technical fields.
5 to 10 years of work experience in Energy Storage Systems, ideally in product development.
Experience with lithium-ion battery systems, ideally in higher voltage and energy ranges (>1kVDC, hundreds of kWh), with BMS, battery protections and cooling, and battery lifetime performance calculations.
Experience in battery integration with advanced cooling (water-cooled battery, immerge battery, dual-phase cooling). Experience in process control systems (PLCs, controllers, ideally redundant and safety control systems), and relevant communication protocols like CAN bus, Ether CAT or IEC61850.
Proven experience in working with systems with high safety requirements (e.g., automotive, aeronautic, railway, marine).
Experience in working with power electronic converter systems, ideally in the MW power range.
Knowledge of quality management tools, process, and quality control (ideally including Software development).
Knowledge of the product development life cycle in terms of system or software and knowledge of performing cost benefit analysis and risk analysis.
You are curious and interested in sustainability and the ongoing energy transition. You want to work on key technologies to solve one of the biggest challenges for humanity today.
You are a natural team- player and enjoy collaborating with others, find clever solutions to solve problems together. You consider innovation as part of your DNA and enjoy thinking outside of the box.
As you will be part of a company that operates on the global arena, you must be proficient in English. Preferably you are also fluent in Swedish.
Willingness to travel frequently (20-30%) in international level.
