Workplace
At the Department of Global Public Health we conduct research, teaching and applied work based on public health science and epidemiology.

The research is aimed at analysing health determinants on the population level, and developing and evaluating preventative structural and individualised measures, including legislation and guidelines. The field also includes health economics, health systems research and implementation research. Our activities have a strongly international flavour, and the Department's researchers are scientific advisers to authorities and other decision-makers on the regional, national and international level. The Department is divided into research groups operating within the fields of global health, public health epidemiology and social medicine with a total of 150 employees. In addition, we have around 80 PhD students.

Research group/Unit
This position is located in the Epidemiology of Psychiatric Conditions, Substance use and Social Environment (EPICSS) research group. The group consists of approximately 30 researchers. Our ultimate aim is to develop early intervention and prevention of mental ill health, including substance use, by understanding risk/protective factors in the context of the social environment.

Your mission
The successful applicant will work to develop and maintain the research groups' resources for epidemiological research, including register- and biosample-based data. Current research interest within the group include characterization of the early life environment (e.g., maternal/fetal immunological status, hormones, and nutritional status) in relation to neurodevelopment and later psychiatric outcomes, such as diagnosis with autism spectrum disorders or schizophrenia.

The researcher will be responsible for coordinating the collection of biosamples (for example, blood samples collected during routine medical procedures in Sweden) from biobanks, collecting data on available biosamples (including decisions regarding analytical endpoints and analysis methods, as well as supervision of students and staff within the laboratory), and integrating these data with available register linkage data. When analytical methods are necessary that are not available locally, the researcher will be responsible for coordinating the transfer and analysis of samples with other laboratories. The researcher is expected to attract funding to support and develop these projects.

The researcher will play a key role in the statistical analysis of biosample and register data, carrying out statistical analyses as well as supervising and instructing students and other researchers in relevant methods. The researcher will actively participate in the preparation and publication of manuscripts, as well as coordinate efforts to disseminate research findings to the broader public (e.g., writing press releases with the press office, preparing lay summaries for publication on the group's website).

The researcher is expected to supervise doctoral students, master students, and visiting researchers within the research group. The researcher is also expected to teach within the master's and doctoral programs within epidemiology and biostatistics at KI. The research group is involved in numerous international collaborations, and the successful applicant will be expected to help maintain and to contribute to these collaborations, including project planning, coordination of data sharing and analysis, and publication of results.

Your profile
A person is eligible to be appointed Senior Researcher if he or she has been awarded a Degree of Doctor or has achieved the corresponding scientific competence, as well as documented research after publicly defending his or her doctoral thesis corresponding to qualification as Assistant professor.

The successful candidate will hold a PhD in medicine or public health and have postdoctoral training within the fields of epidemiology/statistics, neuroscience, or public health. The successful candidate must have:

- Documented research experience and publication history within the fields of epidemiology, molecular biology, and statistics, with a preference for candidates with experience within psychiatric epidemiology or neurodevelopment.
- Demonstrated ability to attract and maintain external funding for research projects.
- Extensive "hands-on" experience in laboratory work, including the use of contemporary methods in proteomics and genetics.
- Prior experience working with large epidemiological cohort studies.
- Excellent English language communication abilities, in terms of both speaking and writing.

Other desired qualities and experiences:

- Demonstrated experience in research communication, with a preference for candidates that have received training in this area.
- Demonstrated ability to work within highly collaborative environments.
- Capacity for creativity, problem-solving, and independence.
