The University of Gothenburg tackles society's challenges with diverse knowledge. 58 000 students and 6800 employees make the university a large and inspiring place to work and study. Strong research and attractive study programmes attract researchers and students from around the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, the University contributes to a better future.Researcher

The Institute of Biomedicine is involved in both research and education. In both of these areas, we focus on fundamental knowledge of the living cell - what it consists of, how it works, how its function is directed by the genetic material, and how it interacts with various kinds of micro-organisms. Using this knowledge, we try to elucidate the causes of diseases, and find new ways to diagnose and treat them. The Institute is composed of the following four departments:

• The Department of Infectious Diseases
• The Department of Microbiology and Immunology
• The Department of Medical Biochemistry and Cell Biology
• The Department of Laboratory Medicine

At present, the institute has about 340 employees and approximately 450 million SEK in total assets.

We can offer an exciting opportunity to join the Mucin Biology groups at the Department of Medical Chemistry and Cell Biology, Institute of Biomedicine, Sahlgrenska Academy, University of Gothenburg. These are internationally renowned research groups forming a strong collaborative network focused on understanding the role of mucins and mucus in protecting epithelial surfaces and how their dysfunction contributes to disease.

Duties
The detailed molecular structure of mucins and related proteins in mucus is not yet fully understood. This is especially true regarding how different proteins and their domains interact with each other and thereby organize the mucus. With increased knowledge of the structure of mucus proteins, we will now be able to predict and begin to understand how different properties of mucus arise, how it can change, and how defects in this structure can be linked to disease. We will express and purify mucins, various mucin domains, and mucus-associated proteins for structural determination using cryo-electron microscopy combined with data processing and modeling, as well as perform other biochemical methods including thermophoresis. The work will be carried out independently, involving both practical structural biology research, compilation of results, and publication.

Qualifications
A doctoral degree in a subject area relevant to the studies is required. This project requires you to have extensive experience and knowledge in structural determination using cryo-electron microscopy and in advanced analysis of the generated data. Knowledge and experience in expressing mucins and their domains, purifying this type of proteins, and performing a wide range of biochemical analyses are expected. Experience in mucin biology research is considered a strong merit. You must have substantial experience conducting independent research at an internationally leading level within the area of structural biology of glycoproteins, such as mucins, and related proteins. You should have an extensive publication record in a relevant research field. The research environment is international, with English as the main language of communication; therefore, excellent spoken and written English skills are required.

Employment
The position is a temporary appointment and full-time for 1 year with placement at the Department of Biomedical and Clinical Sciences. First day of employment as agreed.
