Subject
The Department of Psychology is looking for a researcher to work in Translational Biology.

Research area
We are looking for a researcher who will work in a project entitled: "Rewiring the brain: investigating the dynamics of rapid brain plasticity with high-resolution MRI".

Animal studies have shown that complex learning of motor skills, such as learning dexterous movements, is strongly associated with plasticity both in and outside the primary motor cortex (M1). Mice trained on a pellet reaching task for 23-27 days have shown an enlargement of the cingulate cortex, hippocampus, primary somatosensory cortex (S1) and primary visual cortex (V1) along with M1. However, the formation of projections on the dendrites of M1 can already occur after a single training session.

The announced position, funded by the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation, focuses on using immunohistochemical investigations and repeated structural MRI measurements at 9.4 Tesla of mice (Prisma strain) brains, to investigate the course of changes in brain plasticity over time as the mice learn a new motor task ("single-pellet reaching task (SPRT)").

Duties
You will have a central role in designing, implementing, and coordinating the research project. Your duties include planning the task and the main study, coordinating the experiments, conducting data collection and analyzing data, writing scientific reports and articles, and having overall responsibility for the administration of the project. You will also supervise a post-doctoral researcher.

Qualifications
Doctoral degree in molecular biology or the equivalent thereof is a requirement. The position requires experience in tasks and projects similar to those described above, including good knowledge of various methodologies and instruments used in translational biology. This includes longitudinal in vivo brain imaging of mice, hands-on work with immunohistochemical analysis and experience performing motor training in mice. We attach great importance to personal suitability. Very good knowledge of English (both spoken and written) is required. Basic knowledge of Swedish is an advantage.

Employment
The employment is limited (temporary) to 24 months full-time with placement at the Department of Psychology. First day of employment as agreed.
