The Institute of Biomedicine is involved in both research and education. In both of these areas, we focus on fundamental knowledge of the living cell - what it consists of, how it works, how its function is directed by the genetic material, and how it interacts with various kinds of micro-organisms. Using this knowledge, we try to elucidate the causes of diseases, and find new ways to diagnose and treat them. The Institute is composed of the following four departments:
• The Department of Infectious Diseases
• The Department of Microbiology and Immunology
• The Department of Medical Biochemistry and Cell Biology
• The Department of Laboratory Medicine
At present, the institute has about 340 employees and approximately 450 million SEK in total assets.
Our research group is performing research on enterotoxin-mediated diarrheal diseases, and we are particularly interested in studying the disease symptoms caused by the toxic effects of Cholera toxin (CT). Whereas the glycolipid GM1 was the only previously known functional receptor for CT, we have discovered that CT intoxicates mice that lack GM1.
In addition, we have found that blocking fucosylated structures that are not express by GM1, still efficiently inhibits binding to and CT-induced secretion from human intestinal biopsies. Singla et al; Glycobiology, 2023, Cervin et al ; ACS Infect Dis., 2020 and PLOS Pathog., 2018. CT is also very immune-activating and thereby a potent oral adjuvant. Hence, our findings of novel receptors for CT opens up avenues for new blocking therapies as well as improved oral vaccines.
Duties
The position will be linked to a research project focusing on functional assessments of Cholera toxin and detoxified variants by using organoids derived from human small intestine with the aim to generate improved oral vaccines and antidotes. The methods that will be used in the project include bioinformatics, multicolour flow cytometry and immunohistochemistry, culture of organoids and cell lines as well as cellular assays. The candidate is also expected to supervise students at both master's and doctoral level and to apply for research grants.
Qualifications
To qualify the applicant should have a Ph.D. in relevant subject such as immunology, microbiology or cell biology. Practical laboratory experience within microbiology and/or immunology research is a requirement. Extensive experience in bioinformatics, molecular biology techniques, gene expression analyses, immunohistochemistry and cellular assays are highly valued. Knowledge in the field of vaccinology is a merit. Highly proficient in spoken and written English is necessary.
It is expected that you can conduct research in a highly independent manner. We value a candidate who is driven, organizational, meticulous and effective and independent. Great emphasis will be placed on personal suitability as the project is conducted in collaboration with other researchers.
Employment
The employment is limited (temporary) for 11 months and full-time with placement at the Institute of Biomedicine. First day of employment as agreed.
