The University of Gothenburg tackles society's challenges with diverse knowledge. 56 000 students and 6 600 employees make the university a large and inspiring place to work and study. Strong research and attractive study programmes attract scientists and students from around the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, the University contributes to a better future.

The Institute of Biomedicine is involved in both research and education. In both of these areas, we focus on fundamental knowledge of the living cell - what it consists of, how it works, how its function is directed by the genetic material, and how it interacts with various kinds of micro-organisms. Using this knowledge, we try to elucidate the causes of diseases, and find new ways to diagnose and treat them.

The Institute is composed of the following four departments:

• The Department of Infectious Diseases
• The Department of Microbiology and Immunology
• The Department of Medical Biochemistry and Cell Biology
• The Department of Laboratory Medicine

At present, the institute has about 360 employees and approximately 450 million SEK in total assets.

A research position is available at the Mucins in Infection and Cancer Group at department of Medical Chemistry in Gothenburg, Sweden. Our group investigates the role of mucins during host defense against bacteria, and the biological function of changes in mucosal mucin expression and glycosylation associated with disease. For further information regarding the research in the group see http://www.mivac.se/research/group-leaders/lindengroup.html.

Duties
The project aims to understand how the pathogens Helicobacter pylori and Aeromonas salmonicida are regulated by the mucin environment on the mucous membranes of their hosts. The work includes production of bacterial mutants, analysis of growth and gene expression of the bacteria from in vivo and in vitro experiments as well as analysis of mucins, and their interaction with the above-mentioned pathogens.

Qualifications
Doctoral degree in a relevant subject area. A successful candidate will be selected based on his/her: i) laboratory skills, ii) background and knowledge in a relevant field, iii) oral and written communication skills in English, and iv) analytical ability. Knowledge in microbiology, bacterial culture, mucins and bacteria-host interactions are particularly valued.

Employment
The employment is full time and temporary, 6 months, with placement at the Institute of Biomedicine. First day of employment as agreed.
