The Institute of Biomedicine is involved in both research and education. In both of these The Institute of Biomedicine is involved in both research and education. In both of these areas, we focus on fundamental knowledge of the living cell - what it consists of, how it works, how its function is directed by the genetic material, and how it interacts with various kinds of micro-organisms. Using this knowledge, we try to elucidate the causes of diseases, and find new ways to diagnose and treat them.
The Institute is composed of the following four departments:
• The Department of Infectious Diseases
• The Department of Microbiology and Immunology
• The Department of Medical Biochemistry and Cell Biology
• The Department of Laboratory Medicine
At present, the institute has about 370 employees and approximately 400 million SEK in total assets
A research position is available at the Mucins in Infection and Cancer Group at department of Medical Chemistry in Gothenburg, Sweden. Our group investigates the role of mucins during host defense against bacteria, and the biological function of changes in mucosal mucin expression and glycosylation associated with disease. The project aims to structurally characterize salmonid mucins and their glycosylation and how they are regulated during infection as well as how this can be exploited to prevent and treat infections in aquaculture. The planned work includes structural and functional analysis of mucins and their interaction with the salmonid pathogens.
Qualifications
PhD in a relevant subject. The successful candidate will be selected based on their: i) laboratory skills ii) background and knowledge in a relevant field; iii) oral and written communication skills in English, and iv) analytical skills. Knowledge on mucins, O-glycosylation, microbiology and bacterial - host interactions are particularly valued.
Employment
Fixed-term employment and fulltime for 14 months, with placement at the Institute of Biomedicine. First day of employment as agreed.
