The Institute of Biomedicine is involved in both research and education. In both of these The Institute of Biomedicine is involved in both research and education. In both of these areas, we focus on fundamental knowledge of the living cell - what it consists of, how it works, how its function is directed by the genetic material, and how it interacts with various kinds of micro-organisms. Using this knowledge, we try to elucidate the causes of diseases, and find new ways to diagnose and treat them.
The Institute is composed of the following four departments:
• The Department of Infectious Diseases
• The Department of Microbiology and Immunology
• The Department of Medical Biochemistry and Cell Biology
• The Department of Laboratory Medicine
At present, the institute has about 370 employees and approximately 400 million SEK in total assets
Job assignments
Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a functional bowel disorder affecting 10-15 % of the population in the western world. The cause of IBS is unknown but evidence is accumulating that the patients may have a dysregulated mucosal inflammatory reaction due to alterations in the composition of the gut microbiota.
In the proposed project we aim to demonstrate how gut microbiota and their metabolites are related to alterations of the gut immune system in patients with IBS. The project involves many lab-based techniques isolation and culture of human intestinal cells, development and experiments with organoids, immunohistochemistry, flow cytometry, and PCR. Large and complex data sets will be generated which will be handled by bioinformatics tools.
Qualifications
PhD in relevant subject area is an absolutebe requirement. Previous experience of research within the area of pathophysiology of IBS is advantageous. Substantial experience of isolation and culture of human intestinal cells and work with organoids is mandatory. Experience of handling large and complex data sets with bioinformatics tools, such as Simca, is a merit. Previous demonstrated capability of working independently is highly meriting. The applicant's personal suitability is highly important.
Employment
The employment is limited (temporary) for 4 months and full-time with placement at the Institute of Biomedicine. First day of employment as agreed.
