The University of Gothenburg tackles society's challenges with diverse knowledge. 47 500 students and 6 400 employees make the university a large and inspiring place to work and study. Strong research and attractive study programmes attract scientists and students from around the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, the University contributes to a better future.

The Institute of Biomedicine is involved in both research and education. In both of these areas, we focus on fundamental knowledge of the living cell - what it consists of, how it works, how its function is directed by the genetic material, and how it interacts with various kinds of micro-organisms. Using this knowledge, we try to elucidate the causes of diseases, and find new ways to diagnose and treat them.

The Institute is composed of the following four departments:

• The Department of Infectious Diseases
• The Department of Microbiology and Immunology
• The Department of Medical Biochemistry and Cell Biology
• The Department of Laboratory Medicine

At present, the institute has about 370 employees and approximately 400 million SEK in total assets.

Job assignments
The research group is working with screening of molecular libraries for potential antiviral properties and mechanistic studies in cell culture. The work is conducted in biosafety level 2 and 3 laboratories on various viral strains such as RS- and Corona viruses, herpes viruses, HIV and TBE viruses.

The research will be conducted at the department of infectious diseases/section for clinical virology at the Sahlgrenska Academy. The project is focused on studies on plant extracts and their potential antiviral properties and is part of a SIDA-financed bilateral collaboration between Sweden and Tanzania. The researcher will be supervising a PhD student from Tanzania, half-time for 6 months, by introducing the student to practical laboratory work, such as cell and virus culturing, ELISA, PCR, electron microscopy and sequencing, including Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) techniques. The candidate will also attend to some administrative tasks, such as communicating with Swedish authorities, SIDA and the coordinators of the other bilateral projects. The position requires for the candidate to be able to travel to Tanzania and within Sweden, for planning events.

Qualifications
To qualify for the position the candidate must hold a doctoral degree in virology, previous research experience in the antiviral field is advantageous. Documented experience in cell and virus culturing in biosafety level 2 and 3 laboratories, especially experience in antiviral lead drug screening, PCR techniques such as quantitative PCR, ELISA and electron microscopy is needed. Preferable experience in working with different sequencing techniques, such as NGS. A merit for the position is if the candidate has previous experience from international research collaborations, especially with institutes in low income countries. Preferably documented knowledge in teaching courses at doctoral degree level and previous tutoring of PhD students. All methodology skills should be documented by authorship in accepted peer-reviewed research articles.

Excellent knowledge in written and spoken English is needed, preferably also knowledge in Swedish.

Employment
The employment is limited (temporary) half-time for 6 months with placement at the Institute of Biomedicine. First day of employment as agreed.
