The University of Gothenburg tackles society's challenges with diverse knowledge. 38 000 students and 6 000 employees make the university a large and inspiring place to work and study. Strong research and attractive study programmes attract scientists and students from around the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, the University contributes to a better future.

The Institute of Biomedicine is involved in both research and education. In both of these areas, we focus on fundamental knowledge of the living cell - what it consists of, how it works, how its function is directed by the genetic material, and how it interacts with various kinds of micro-organisms. Using this knowledge, we try to elucidate the causes of diseases, and find new ways to diagnose and treat them. At present, the institute has about 360 employees and approximately 400 million SEK in total assets. The Institute is composed of the following five departments: the Department of Infectious Diseases, the Department of Microbiology and Immunology, the Department of Pathology and Genetics, the Department of Clinical Chemistry and Transfusion Medicine and the Department of Medical Biochemistry and Cell Biology.

More than two-thirds of the human genome is transcribed, generating thousands of long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) that currently outnumber the protein coding RNAs. LncRNA, which are more than 200 nucleotides, do not encode any proteins but take part in all ciritical biological functions that have impact on development and differentiation. Mis-expression of lncRNAs leads to tumorigenesis. Though current estimates put annotated lncRNAs number to more than 20,000 but only a handful of them have been functionally characterized.

Job assignments

The main aim of the project is to identify key regulatory long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) involved in neuroblastoma progression. Candidate molecules will be identified and characterized using a range of experimental and computational techniques, ranging from large-scale genomics to focused molecular and cell biology and biochemical studies.

Qualifications

Highly motivated candidates with a strong background in cell & molecular biology, and cancer biology will be preferred for this project. Experience in Wide-range of approaches including protein biochemistry, cell and molecular biology, functional genomics and molecular imaging is required. Candidates with extensive experience in RNA biology and protein biochemistry will have an advantage.

Employment

The employment is limited (temporary) for 2 years and full-time with placement at the Insittute of Biomedicine. First day of employment as agreed.
