The University of Gothenburg tackles society's challenges with diverse knowledge. 38 000 students and 6 000 employees make the university a large and inspiring place to work and study. Strong research and attractive study programmes attract scientists and students from around the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, the University contributes to a better future.

The Institute of Biomedicine is involved in both research and education. In both of these areas, we focus on fundamental knowledge of the living cell - what it consists of, how it works, how its function is directed by the genetic material, and how it interacts with various kinds of micro-organisms. Using this knowledge, we try to elucidate the causes of diseases, and find new ways to diagnose and treat them.

The Institute is composed of the following five departments:

The Department of Infectious Diseases

The Department of Microbiology and Immunology

The Department of Pathology and Genetics

The Department of Clinical Chemistry and Transfusion Medicine

The Department of Medical Biochemistry and Cell Biology

At present, the institute has about 360 employees and approximately 400 million SEK in total assets.

Sahlgrenska Academy, Institute of Biomedicine, Department Medical Biochemistry and Cell Biology, Mucin Biologiy Groups are recruiting a researcher. The groups use English as the main language of communication and a good knowledge of spoken and written English is an absolute requirement. The Mucin Biology research groups currently comprise about 25 researchers with some 30 more in collaborative groups, see also www.medkem.gu.se/mucinbiology/

All the mucous membranes of the body are covered by a protective mucus layer. These mucus layers are different in different parts of the body and have mucins as their main ingredient. This includes both intestines and airways. The research group has shown that mucins are crosslinked by transglutamination catalyzed by enzymes called transglutaminases. Transglutaminases are also important for the appearance of gluten intolerance where understanding of initiating processes is an important part of the current project.

Job assignments

Biochemical characterization of covalent crosslinks in the form of isopeptide bonds occurring within and between mucins and related proteins as a result of transglutaminase activities. In particular, these should be studied in relation to ulcerative colitis and gluten intolerance. Well acquainted with biochemical methods for the analysis of isopeptide bonds including electrophoresis, HPLC, thermophores, and proteomics and knowledge to be able to evaluate obtained results. Of particular importance is being able to utilize mass spectrometry to identify isopeptide bonds.

Qualifications

Ph. D. in biochemistry with long experience of research and methods in mucin biology. Particular emphasis is placed on work with mucins and their specific problems and modifications with glycans, which requires specifically adapted methods. Good familiarity with mass spectrometry which includes sample preparation and analysis with specific computer software. Some administrative and teaching skills are desirable. Good knowledge of scientific English and everyday Swedish is a prerequisite. Personal experience from several years of research at more than one institution and from other than Sweden is a required.

The project requires good familiarity with biochemical methods and mass spectrometry to study the origin and effect of transglutamination of mucins in both intestines and lungs.

Employment

The employment is a full-time permanent position placed at the Institute of Biomedicine. First day of employment as agreed. Probationary employment is applied.
