The University of Gothenburg tackles society's challenges with diverse knowledge. 37 000 students and 6 000 employees make the university a large and inspiring place to work and study. Strong research and attractive study programmes attract scientists and students from around the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, the University contributes to a better future.

The University of Gothenburg promotes equal opportunities, equality and diversity.

The Institute of Biomedicine is involved in both research and education. In both of these areas, we focus on fundamental knowledge of the living cell - what it consists of, how it works, how its function is directed by the genetic material, and how it interacts with various kinds of micro-organisms. Using this knowledge, we try to elucidate the causes of diseases, and find new ways to diagnose and treat them.

Job assignments

Main responsibilities will be to continue running the ongoing research project "The genetics of colorectal cancer", as part of an established research group. The aim of the project is to identify genetic changes that could be used as biomarkers in colorectal cancer. The goal is to improve the conditions and potential for personalized monitoring and treatment of patients with this disease.

As a researcher, you are responsible for planning and executing project tasks, compile and interpret data, write scientific publications, present results at scientific meetings and conferences, collaborate with partners in public health care and universities, as well as applying for research funding. Furthermore, you will assist the Principal Investigator (PI) in organizing and administrating practical as well as theoretical aspects of the project.

The daily tasks will include practical laboratory work as well as computer-based analyses. Molecular-genetic methodology predominantly involving NGS (Next-generation sequencing)-based techniques such as panel- and exom/genome based analyses are central for the project but also methodology such as, Sanger sequencing, copy number and expression analyses using microarrays, qPCR and/or digital PCR are used in the project. Protein-based methods, Western blotting, enzyme assays, protein extractions and sequencing as well as analyses using TOF-MS, could possibly also be used in the project. A central part of the project is identification, interpretation and characterization of DNA variants why possibly also functional analyses including in vivo experiments in yeast models will be used in the project.

Qualifications

The successful applicant should have a Ph.D. in molecular biology with a focus on genetics/biochemistry. A strong background, theoretical as well as practical, in the above mentioned molecular biology techniques, tumor biology and genetics, is an essential criterion. Experience of postdoctoral research within the subject area, particularly involving functional studies in yeast cells, is considered a strong merit.

Since we collaborate with both national and international partners, fluency in Swedish and English (spoken and written) is a requirement. Experience from working abroad in an English speaking laboratory environment is considered a plus. The main part of the project is based on material from the clinic which is why practical knowledge of the Swedish public health care system and experience with handling of patient samples are required.

A pronounced ability to work independently, with flexibility and accuracy, as well as possessing excellent collaborative and organizational skills are essential criteria. We put great emphasis on personal suitability and the ability to work as part of a team.

The application should contain proof of completed PhD.

Employment

The employmnent is limited (temporary) 50% for 12 months with placement at the Institute of biomedicin. First day of employment as agreed.
