Verksamhetsbeskrivning
Welcome to the largest Institute at the University of Gothenburg
Our activities cover a broad area of knowledge, where we conduct successful research, from molecules to the community.
The research covers several of the major endemic diseases, including Cardiovascular Disease, Diabetes, Obesity and Arthritis. Other strong areas are Public Health and Community Medicine, Respiratory Medicine, Haematology and Gastrointestinal Research. A new research field within innovation and entrerpreneurship is being formed.
We are responsible for a large part of the teaching of medical practice, all of the Public Health Program and the Dietitian Program, and parts of the training of Biomedical Technicians and Pharmacy. The Institute of Medicine has almost 280 registered postgraduate students.

Endocrinological research is an important part of the map within the Institute of Medicine. This research involves both basal and clinical research regarding growth hormone, cortisol, sex hormones and thyroid hormone. Doc Helena Filipsson Nyström is the leader of the thyroid unit with research projects about the effect of thyroid hormone and iodine on brain function. Within this project an important task is manual segmentation of MR images. An ongoing close cooperation with two other GU institutions and with Karolinska Institutet that is centered on such analyses is led by emeritus professor Helge Malmgren at the Institute of Medicine.

Arbetsuppgifter
Manual segmentation of brain structures in MR images from children, adults and elderly, especially medial temporal lobe structures (hippocampus and amygdala). Further development and evaluation of methods for manual segmentation. Analysis of white matter lesions and their clinical significance. Analysis of the relations between manual and automatic methods for segmentation.

Utbildning/Erfarenhet
PhD with a thesis of direct relevance for the task, alternatively several years of relevant post-doctoral research. Deep knowledge of the principles of structural MRI of the brain. Extensive experience of manual segmentation of MR images, especially hippocampus and amygdala, in patients of all age groups (children, adults, elderly) and including patients with severe brain disease. Experience of assessing white matter lesions (WML). Documented ability to initiate and lead developmental work in these areas. Familiarity with several methods of automatic segmentation of brain MRI. Documented good collaborative skills for work in interdisciplinary teams.
