We are recruiting an experienced and motivated mid-career Research Fellow with a background in infrastructure planning in coastal areas. You will be part of the newly established Coasts and Seas team, where you will contribute to building a portfolio of work within infrastructure diversification and critical service provision in coastal areas and islands.

Length of contract: 2 years with possibility of extension

The role
We are recruiting an experienced and motivated mid-career Research Fellow with a background in infrastructure planning in coastal areas. You will be part of the newly established Coasts and Seas team, where you will contribute to building a portfolio of work within infrastructure diversification and critical service provision in coastal areas and islands.
You will also contribute to the work of two ongoing projects:
HydroHazards evaluates the impacts and cascading effects that can be caused by multiple water hazards on critical infrastructures and social vulnerability and provides recommendations on policies and actions for mitigation and adaptation in the Swedish context.
The SEI Initiative on Gridless Solutions explores the development and deployment of off-grid technologies and services and their potential when it comes to acceleration of sustainability transitions.

Key duties and responsibilities
Project-related tasks
Within HydroHazards, carry out criticality, vulnerability and resilience analyses of critical infrastructures and their interdependencies in light of multiple hydrometeorological events.
Within Gridless, assess suitable (green, blue, grey, circular, off-shore, hybrid, multipurpose) infrastructure for islands in context of sea-level rise and hydrometeorological extremes.
Together with the team, prepare publications for scientific dissemination.
Support internal and external outreach, engage and follow-up with key stakeholders.

Team-related tasks
Take a leading role in developing the portfolio of work related to resilient coastal infrastructures within the Coasts and Seas team
Contribute to conceptual and methodological development of research on vulnerability and resilience of coastal infrastructures and system interdependencies
Contribute to developing scenarios of sociotechnical solutions
Contribute to writing grant applications to support collaborative and interdisciplinary research
Contribute to building the team's networks in related spheres and contribute to developing strategic partnerships with research, policy and private sector actors.

Who you are
You have academic or practical experience with urban systems exposed to natural hazards in coastal settings. Alternatively, you have worked with infrastructure planning and sustainable coastal development, including protection measures combining (grey) engineered structures and eco-engineering or nature-based solutions approaches (green/blue).
You have numerical modelling and data analysis skills or you are able to perform risk assessments in relation to environmental, demographic and technical stressors.
Additionally, you have experience managing and coordinating projects with multiple partners and you are not a stranger to project design, budget management and financial reporting. You are familiar with funder requirements and consortium relations.

Required qualifications and knowledge
PhD in infrastructure, structural, coastal, civil, or environmental engineering, physical geography, or physics
Academic background or research experience in sustainable coastal planning, hydrology, integrated coastal zone planning, marine and coastal policy, urban studies, environmental sciences or industrial economics
Track record of working with quantitative methodologies and software such as GIS, network-based models, numerical modelling or scenario-based analyses
3-5 years of work experience
Experience of leading own research and working with multidisciplinary teams
Have a demonstrated transdisciplinary approach
Publication record
Ability to connect research output to societal needs
Ability to communicate effectively with researchers from various disciplines as well as non-academic audiences
Excellent oral and written communication skills in English for both technical and lay audiences
Experience working in multidisciplinary diverse teams, including teams comprising of researchers, technical roles and policymakers.

Desirable skills and experience
Expertise in mixed-method approaches to solve complex problems such as participatory mapping, visualization techniques, foresight, surveys, or statistics
Swedish and other language skills
Work experience beyond research, even if unrelated to the specific topic
Experience working with cities, municipalities, local planners, or public agencies.
