hela Sverige The European Spallation Source (ESS) is a partnership organization of 13 European member countries located in the city of Lund, Sweden. The ESS is hiring motivated and inspiring people from across the globe to design, construct and operate the world's most powerful neutron source. We seek collaborative, talented people in a range of fields who are excited about playing a part in the future of science in Europe.
ESS is currently looking for a Sample Environment Research Engineer for the low temperature (cryogenics) field. This is a critical role within the Sample Environment Group which is part of the Science Directorate's Scientific Activities Division. As part of the Sample Environment team at ESS, your primary task will be to define, select, develop, integrate and later operate and maintain, innovative sample environment systems for low temperatures at ESS. Such systems are required for experiments throughout the ESS instrument suite, but during your first years at ESS you will focus on sample environment systems needed to enable first science when the facility enters operation.
About the role:
Your main responsibilities and tasks will include - but are not limited to:
• Define, choose and procure new low temperature sample environment systems in collaboration with the instrument scientists. These systems include, but are not limited to, cryostats (flow, wet and dry), cryofurnaces, dilutions and 3He sorption;
• Test the systems and supervise their control and mechanical integration;
• Develop new low temperature sample environment systems;
• Lead and/or participate to development projects such as sample changers for cryostats;
• Work closely with other engineers and technicians within and outside the sample environment group;
• Support neutrons instruments and users during operation. This work will include on-call duties at night and during week-ends;
• Collaborate with expert teams within and outside ESS: the selected candidate will be invited to join existing research and development projects and initiate new ones. You will be given the possibility to gain additional professional experience at other scientific facilities if needed.
About you:
To thrive with us in the Sample Environment Group we would expect you to have the following background:
• Masters degree (or Bachelor with at least 10 years of experience) in engineering or one of the physical sciences;
• Hands on experience in using cryogenics for research experiments; experience with magnetic fields would be an asset;
• Previous experience in operation and supporting users at large facilities and/or research labs;
• Experience in developing sample environment for research facilities;
• Spoken and written fluency in English is required.
We put great emphasis to personality and attitude, so we're looking for a real team player: Someone who is sociable, has excellent communication skills and likes to collaborate in a diverse environment. You are reliable, proactive, have a supporting mindset of helping colleagues and users, have the ability to plan and organise your work and are open to learning.
