Department of Plant Protection Biology
The Department of Plant Protection Biology is interdisciplinary with good opportunities for strong research collaboration. World-leading research in integrated pest management, chemical ecology and resistance biology provides a dynamic work environment with good reputation in both basic and applied research.

Integrated pest management is based on a combination of different actions against pests. The Integrated Plant Protection Unit has a wide range of activities that include research on both insect pests and pathogens, as well as on beneficial organisms such as pollinators and the natural enemies of pests.

Integrated Disease Management of Early Blight on Potato

Description:
As part of an ongoing research project we are searching for a temporary research assistant to perform experiments at the interface between basic and applied research into the control of potato diseases, with particular focus on the management of early blight of potato. We have already identified several promising approaches to the control of potato early blight, caused by the fungus, Alternaria solani. In the next phase of the project, we require a research assistant to perform larger scale greenhouse tests to evaluate the performance of control strategies in a combined way as part of the development of an integrated early blight disease management program in potato. Thus, we will test different combinations of biological control, resistance inducers and synthetic pesticides in both greenhouse and field scale experiments. Furthermore, since we have recently identified mutations that give rise to pesticide resistance within Swedish Alternaria solani populations, we will continue to screen for the presence of such mutations in local pathogen populations.

This position is based in the Integrated Plant Protection unit at the Department of Plant Protection Biology at SLU. Our department, is an interdisciplinary constellation, encompassing Chemical Ecology, Resistance Biology and Integrated Plant Protection research units, providing excellent opportunities for strong research collaboration within and outside the departmental area. Research efforts at the department are directed towards both fundamental and applied research. Applied plant protection research is carried out in collaboration with industry and focuses primarily on the development of environmentally sustainable pest and disease control strategies for agriculture and horticulture, both in Sweden and internationally.

Qualifications:
We are looking for a dedicated research assistant with practical experience in microbiology, and of handling greenhouse and growth chamber assays. In vitro and greenhouse cultivation of potato or similar species and a strong grasp of aseptic technique is essential. Experience growing and maintaining fungi including Alternaria solani, oomycetes such as Phytophthora infestans and/or Pythium oligandrum as well as members of the bacterial genus Bacillus is advantageous. A familiarity with early blight symptoms and scoring disease on potato is important. You should also be confident handling synthetic pesticides and experience in developing or performing pesticide resistance assays is highly meritorious. A demonstrated ability to plan, perform and analyse complex multi-factorial greenhouse trials is highly advantageous. A strong command of written and spoken English is essential. Excellent collaborative skills, high motivation and enthusiasm are important, as well as ability to work both independently and in a team. Personal skills are therefore an important part of the evaluation.
