Welcome to Linnaeus University! A place for knowledge, ideas and development. For growth potential and a belief in the future. In Småland and in the world.

The Department of Biology and Environmental Science is part of the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences. The research activities within this multidisciplinary school include the areas of Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Biomedical Sciences, Organic Chemistry, Marine Ecology and Microbiology.

The marine microbiology research group in Kalmar seeks a project assistant for studies of bacterioplankton ecology.

Project title
Bacterioplankton dynamics in a changing climate perspective.

The research project
Bacteria are major drivers of biogeochemical cycles in the sea, but molecular detail on how they impact on particular element cycles remains largely unknown. Even less is known to how bacterial ecosystem functioning is affected by changes in environmental conditions. This work will focus on bioinformatics analyses of data from a seawater mesocosm experiment, with the aim to assess how particular metabolisms and physiological features allow distinct populations of bacteria to successfully adapt to different environmental conditions. Analyses will involve statistical assessments of relationship between measured environmental variables and bacterioplankton community gene expression (metatranscriptomics).

Qualification requirements
Applicants should have a minimum of an advanced level undergraduate (240hp/240ECTS) degree in biology, ecology or microbial ecology. Applicants should have documented expertise in performing mesocosm experiments and interpreting results from studies of natural mixed bacterial assemblages (e.g. data on microbial abundance, and production and nutrient concentrations). Applicants should also have expertise in using bioinformatics pipelines for statistical analyses of gene expression of marine bacterioplankton communities. Proficiency in written and spoken English is required.

Other assessment grounds that would place the candidate at an advantage include experience with working with seawater microcosm experiments, and the ability to work independently to solve problems as well as interact well in a research group.

Terms of Employment
Full time for 6 months. The employment is scheduled to start July 1 2018.

Kalmar
