Vacancy: Professor/Senior Lecturer in Eastern Christian Studies - Middle Eastern Christian Studies and Christian-Muslim Relations

Subject orientation: Eastern Christian Studies and/or Middle Eastern Christian Studies and Christian-Muslim Relations

Stockholm School of Theology is one of the leading theological institutions in Sweden. Its overall purpose is to provide education and foster research of the highest quality and to interact with Church and Society. Our most valuable asset is our students who, with their willingness to develop and learn, make Stockholm School of Theology one of Scandinavia's most prominent theological schools. The School has two departments: Religious Studies and Theology, and Eastern Christian Studies. The latter department is organised in collaboration with Sankt Ignatios College, which provides an important connection with the Orthodox world.

The Department of Eastern Christian Studies in cooperation with Sankt Ignatios College is now looking for a professor or senior lecturer in Eastern Christian Studies. She or he will pursue research and teach within the field of Middle Eastern Christian Studies and Christian-Muslim relations, and within one of the fields particular to Eastern Christian Studies - Eastern Christian Theology, International Relations and Ecumenism, or Religion, Art, and Democracy.

Subject Orientation: Middle Eastern Christian Studies and Christian-Muslim Relations, and one of the fields particular to Eastern Christian Studies (see above). The area of study has four elements: 1) The historical development of Middle Eastern Christianity, both in an ecclesiological as well as in a geopolitical sense; 2) The role of religion in the historical and contemporary settings of the civil society; 3) Christian-Muslim relations in the history and the present; 4) Training future scholars, teachers and leaders from the Middle East

Tasks: The position includes the teaching of courses related to the subject orientation and, in addition, taking on course responsibilities such as examination, supervision and administration. The post involves collaboration according to the fillowing. First, in collaboration with the Department of Eastern Christian Studies, where teaching is conducted in all three cycles. Secondly, in relation to Sankt Ignatios College, which curremtly has five local theological seminaries: the Coptic, the Syriac, the Ethiopian, the-Eritrean, and the Byzantine.

Eligibility requirements: Applicants must have a doctoral degree in a relevant subject area (see Subject Orientation). In addition, she or he must have documented and relevant pedagogical skills and the personal qualities required to adequately fulfill the role. The ability to teach in English is also required. On top of this the candidate should either be a professor, or a Senior Lecturer with very good academic merits.

Assessment grounds: Pedagogical skills and scientific skills are of equal importance for the position.

Scientific skills: When selecting among eligible applicants, importance will be placed on the quality of the applicant's research merits.

Pedagogical Skills: The applicant's pedagogical qualifications will be assessed primarily in qualitative terms. The applicant should also be able to demonstrate a breadth and depth of pedagogical ability. These abilities should be well documented.

Other skills: Administrative and management skills are also important. Such skills should include a capacity for project planning and an ability to cooperate. Since the position also relates to Christian-Muslim relations the position requires documented thorough knowledge about Islam.
The position is a full-time permanent position, starting from November 1st 2021, or as soon as possible.

Selected candidates will then be interviewed by the dean, the deputy dean and the relevant professors.
The academic committee will then make an evaluation and make a recommendation before the final position. The employent will be located to Stockholm School of Theology, Enskilda Högskolan Stockholm.
