The Department of Archaeology and Classical Studies is the largest archaeological environment in Sweden and in 2006 was appointed one of Stockholm University's leading research areas. It consists of six sections/units Archaeology, Archaeological Research Laboratory, Stockholm Numismatic Institute, Osteoarchaeological Research Laboratory, Classical Archaeology and Ancient History, and Centre for the Study of Cultural Evolution. At the department, research is conducted in several different fields and the study programmes have a wide profile. The position is placed at the Archaeological Research Laboratory that was inaugurated in 1976 with Birgit Arrhenius as its first professor. Main research focus at the laboratory is scientific analyses of archaeological source materials where the analyses are determined by the relevant archaeological questions at issue. The new professor will focus on aDNA analysis of both human and animal remains. The Archaeological Research Laboratory is now expanding with new laboratory facilities and equipment.

Main responsibilities
The position involves research, teaching and supervision at all levels within the field of Molecular archaeology. The position also involves administration connected to the aDNA-faciltilies at the Archaeological Research Laboratory. Some teaching within the Departments ordinary classes might also occur. It is also involves initiation and performing research and teaching activities that build upon contacts within Stockholm University, as well as between the Universities in the Stockholm area and other national and international universities, and further, contacts with the surrounding community. The position further involves application for external funding for research, organizing work-shops, conferences and seminars.

Qualification requirements
A person who has demonstrated both research and teaching skills is qualified for employment as a professor. The person that qualifies should have demonstrated research skills within the field of Molecular archaeology through independent research well above the requirements for a Reader.

A general assessment criterion is the ability to work with other people, as well as other general abilities required to perform one's duties.

Assessment criteria
Special attention will be given to research skills in the appointment process, particularly within the field of Molecular archaeology. Attention will also be given to teaching skills. Great attention will be given to experience of leading and developing research. In addition, administrative skills and the ability to collaborate with the surrounding community will be considered.

A general assessment criterion is the ability to work with other people, as well as other general abilities required to perform one's duties.

Special attention will also be given the ability to develop and lead academic activities, to apply and achieve external funding, to collaborate with the surrounding society and to inform about research and development.

A research plan should be attached to the application, where the applicant provides his/her view upon the future development of the aDNA- activities at the Archaeological Research Laboratory, sketch possible research projects and presents his/her future research. This plan will be given special attention in the evaluation of the applications competence.

Teaching and learning in higher education
Completed training in teaching and learning in higher education worth at least 15 credits, or equivalent knowledge, is an advantage.

Additional information
Proficiency in Swedish is not a requirement at the time of appointment, but the candidate should be prepared to carry out teaching and administrative duties that require proficiency in Swedish within two years of employment.
