LINKÖPING UNIVERSITY
Hereby advertises a position as
Postdoctoral researcher in Molecular Physics
for structural characterization of antifouling polymers by neutron reflectivity
formally based at the Department of Physics, Chemistry and Biology (IFM)
Background
At the division of Molecular Physics, we conduct fundamental and applied research on biologically relevant problems in surface- and nano-science, with applications in biosensors, biomaterials, medicine and marine biofouling. The research is multidisciplinary, and many projects include collaborations with national and international scientists in medicine, biochemistry, organic chemistry or marine biology.
Our research in antifouling materials includes both development of protein resistant surfaces for biomedical applications and non-toxic strategies for the prevention of marine biofouling. The activities in these areas are aiming at a molecular understanding of how proteins, cells or marine organisms interact with surfaces, and how adsorption or colonization depend on the physico-chemical properties of the surfaces. Careful studies of the used materials with advanced characterization methods are of central importance for this activity.
Duties
You will participate in a project on structural characterization of antifouling polymers, to which also a doctoral student will be recruited. Correlation of antifouling efficacy and the molecular structure of the polymers is of central importance to the project. This project includes preparation of polymeric coatings, physico-chemical investigations of these, and studies of protein resistance, bioadhesion or marine fouling onto these coatings. The polymers are synthesized via, for example, SI-ATRP or initiator-free photopolymerization (SIPGP). Structural characterization will be carried out using spectroscopic ellipsometry and QCM-D, and in particular, by neutron reflectivity. The project has a strong multidisciplinary character, and your duties will be to lead the research in one of the project areas, depending on your background, and to participate in the supervision of the doctoral student.
A Postdoctoral researcher will essentially carry out research. The position may also involve teaching, constituting no more than a fifth of work time.
Requirements
To qualify for the position, a doctoral degree in an area of immediate relevance to the project is required. Experience from neutron reflectometry is of particular value for the position. Applicants without previous experience of neutron scattering should be experienced in the preparation of surface-bound polymers, and evaluation of their antifouling properties in assays of direct relevance to biomedical or marine applications.
Qualifications
The position requires a doctorate degree, or a degree which can be considered equivalent. The doctorate shall have been obtained no longer than three years before the expiration date of the application.
Appointment time
A Postdoctor is appointed until further notice, but for no longer than two years. The appointment can be renewed if there are special reasons.
Starting date
As soon as possible, or by agreement
Salary
The University applies individual salary scales adapted to the experience of the employee and to the labour market.
