Department of Forest Ecology and Management
We are looking for a Postdoctoral fellow to participate in a research project, 'New ways to improve water protection from forestry practices?', at the Department of Forest Ecology and Management, Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, Umeå, Sweden. The project goal is to understand the resiliency of small streams in managed forest landscapes. In particular, we will investigate the effects of forest harvest on water quality and ecology of small streams downstream of harvested areas. The department includes 90 people of about 10 are professors. Our mission is to advance the understanding of forest ecosystem processes and to progress the principles of forest ecosystem management. For more information, http://www.slu.se/en/departments/forest-ecology-management/

Duties:
The main responsibility of the postdoctoral fellow is to empirically and experimentally investigate how forest harvesting adjacent to streams affects downstream stream reaches, and whether water quality and stream ecosystem processes and biota recover in streams that enter unharvested forest patches below clear-cuts. The postdoctoral fellow will also work with different riparian buffer management practices and study how buffers mitigate propagation of downstream effects. The exact response variables investigated in this project will be decided together with postdoc but they will represent various water and ecosystem quality indicators for boreal forests. This project also links to a number of experiments running in the near-by Krycklan catchment and other experimental areas, which offers a great opportunity for collaboration and participation in other projects for the candidate.

The position will be based at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences in Umeå, but will require field travels across Sweden and potentially in Finland as well. The postdoctoral fellow will be supervised by Dr. Lenka Kuglerová and will actively collaborate with Prof. Larry Greenberg at Karlstad University. The postdoctoral fellow will also have the opportunity to collaborate with Prof. Hjalmar Laudon and Dr. Johanna Lundström, who are project partners and members of the project team.

Qualifications:
We seek a talented and motivated postdoctoral researcher who has a strong interest in stream and riparian systems, disturbance and resilience. The candidate should have expertise in lotic ecosystems, especially water quality, ecology, or hydrology. The most qualified applicants will have relevant experience with biological and physical processes in streams, field sampling in lotic ecosystems, and forestry practices, but does not need to be fully trained in all areas. Ability to program and analyze data in R is highly desirable, as is experience with GIS software. Candidates must be able to write well in English and have experience at effectively communicate research findings within and outside of academia. Evidence of successful participation in team projects as well as the ability to work independently is essential. Applicants must have completed and defended their Ph.D. in ecology, environmental sciences or related fields before application. A post-doc position is part of the career-path for junior researchers, therefore we are mostly searching for candidates with a doctoral degree less than three years old (excluding parental leave). Previous peer-reviewed scientific publications are highly desirable.
