The University of Gothenburg tackles society's challenges with diverse knowledge. 47 500 students and 6 400 employees make the university a large and inspiring place to work and study. Strong research and attractive study programmes attract scientists and students from around the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, the University contributes to a better future.

Group Linda Fogelstrand at the Department of Laboratory Medicine is recruiting a postdoctoral fellow for a project on acute myeloid leukemia.

Subject area
Acute myeloid leukemia - treatment response

Subject area description
Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is the most common form of acute leukemia. Unfortunately, the prognosis is poor, mostly due to high frequency of relapses using the current treatment strategies. Over the last years, it has become increasingly evident that the response to AML treatment, assessed as measurable residual disease (MRD), is a very strong prognostic factor. MRD analyses are also of interest for early detection of relapse. However, problems with standardization and applicability in individual patients hamper clinical usage of MRD analyses. The overall aim of the research in the group is to improve the basis for treatment decisions for children and adults with AML. We do this primarily through improvement and evaluation of MRD analyses. We also work on understanding the role of other factors, such as the surrounding bone marrow composition, for the success of treatment. The research group is located at the Department of Laboratory Medicine, Institute of Biomedicine and is closely linked to the hematology diagnostics units at Sahlgrenska University Hospital.

The success of AML treatment is largely dependent on the presence/absence of residual leukemic cells. What is less known is how the bone marrow environment during treatment affects the treatment efficiency and outcome. Since AML is a very heterogeneous disease, the role of the microenvironment might differ depending on the treatment, host and leukemia genetics. In the current project, we will evaluate the importance of residual leukemic cells and the surrounding healthy bone marrow during treatment of AML. We will use conventional techniques such as flow cytometry and RT-qPCR, our newly developed MRD analysis using next generation sequencing, and single cell applications.

Job assignments
The postdoctoral project will include analysis-based work on already obtained flow cytometry and sequencing data and some experimental work. In the group, we collaborate closely with clinical hematologists, pediatric oncologists and experimental research groups nationally and internationally. Due to the collaborative nature of the project, it might include stays at other labs.

Eligibility
An achieved doctoral degree is compulsory for a position as postdoctor at Göteborg University. The doctoral thesis shall be in a relevant area according to the specific position stated here. Since a position as postdoctor aims to give new holders of the doctorate the opportunity mainly to strengthen and develop their scholarly proficiency, we aim for those who have a doctoral degree not older than 3 years counting from last date of application.

The qualifications for academic positions are given in Chapter 4, Section 3 - 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance.

Assessment
PhD in a relevant field. The postdoctoral fellow is well acquainted with flow cytometry of leukocytes and preferably has experience from hematopoiesis or leukemia research, single cell techniques, RNA sequencing and bioinformatics. In addition to previous experience from the above-mentioned areas, the post-doctoral fellow is highly motivated, used to work independently and has good interpersonal and problem-solving skills.

Regulations for the evaluation of qualifications for academic positions are given in Chapter 4, Section 3 - 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance

Employment
The employment is full time and temporary, two years, with placement at the Institute of Biomedicine. First day of employment as agreed.

Appointment procedure
Suitable candidates will be interviewed, preferably in person. Personal skills and previous experience will be evaluated and references will be contacted.
