Are you passionate about research and model development? Are you interested in numerical modeling and meteorology, with a focus on atmospheric turbulence? Then this could be the job for you. At SMHI, you can work in a highly competent and international environment, where your skills contribute to solutions for a more sustainable society.

About the Meteorological Research Unit

We are now looking for reinforcements for our Meteorological Research Unit, which conducts research and development work in the air environment, weather forecasts, climate analyses and atmospheric processes. The daily work includes work with observational data, meteorological analyses and development of models for regional weather forecasts in the Nordic region as well as remote sensing, climate analysis and air quality on an urban to global scale. You can read more about the unit on our website.

About the position

As a postdoctoral fellow, you will work within an externally funded project focusing on the development and maintenance of 3D turbulence solvers for numerical weather forecasts. The research aims to create innovative solutions that can be implemented in SMHI's operational models. The role includes both research and software development and is carried out in collaboration with both internal and international partners.

About you

We are looking for someone with a PhD in physics, engineering, meteorology/atmospheric physics or similar fields, with experience in numerical modeling in fluid mechanics and high-performance computing (HPC). The role requires that you have good English skills. If you do not have knowledge of Swedish, we expect that you have achieved sufficient knowledge within two years to be able to use Swedish as a working language.

We are looking for someone who meets the following requirements:

• Documented programming skills in Fortran.
• Familiarity with the Linux environment.
• Proven experience in numerical modeling in HPC
• You should have good habits of documenting and reporting your work (technical and scientific).

In addition to the above requirements, the following experience and skills are desirable:

• Programming skills in C, C++ and Python.
• Knowledge of parallelization with MPI and OpenMP.
• Experience with GPU-based calculations.
• Good habit of working in large systems and with shared development in e.g. git.
• Experience with numerical weather predictions (NWP).
• Practical experience with numerical solution methods in CFD and work with 3D turbulence.
• Experience with numerical analysis.
• Experience with system development.
• Experience of working in international projects and interdisciplinary collaboration.

As the position involves collaboration with others, good collaboration skills are required, while you have an analytical approach and the ability to work independently. In order to share results and drive projects forward, it is important that you have good communication skills with others, both in internal and external contexts.

The algorithms and methods you are expected to develop will be implemented in an existing numerical weather forecasting system. Thus it is important to write high-standard code that is well-tested, easy to maintain, and efficient to execute. We therefore assume that you are interested in writing clean, readable code, and have an interest in constantly further developing your programming skills, as well as your working methods.

Employment type

The position is a two-year fixed-term contract, with the possibility of a one-year extension.

Location

One of our offices in Norrköping, Uppsala or Gothenburg.

Application deadline

Welcome with your application no later than 2025-04-13.
