Skilled and committed employees are a crucial factor in the success of Linköping University. And we need more of them. Our core expertise comes from teachers and researchers, but a successful university requires experienced and motivated employees in many fields. Everyone is important. We need to recruit many new employees thanks to, among all, an expansion in our research activity. We need you here. We look forward to receiving your application!

The Department of Physics, Chemistry and Biology conducts research and offers education at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Research, the predominant activity, is often done in collaboration with corporate and international partners. We are one of the university's largest, oldest and most well known departments, encompassing five interacting scientific fields: biology, chemistry, material physics, applied physics and theory and modelling.

Work assignments
At the Theoretical Physics department we utilize theoretical and computational physics to perform fundamental research in the area of materials design and informatics. In collaboration with leading Swedish companies Sandvik Coromant and Seco Tools supported by VINNOVA we are developing the Hard-coating Alloys DataBase (HADB); a database of properties calculated for chemically disordered alloys of interest for hard coating and energy applications. We are aiming for a high-end implementation of HADB through a web-based user interface which allows users to explore the data and download files either with internet browser or through OPTIMADE API. Besides the software development we work on adding more data to HADB and exploring the database via machine learning approaches. The position is for a research project in developing and utilizing HADB. Work tasks include (i) software development to establish a modern database and (ii) materials research using the in-house httk workflow for automated computations combined with machine learning/AI-based methods.

The position is in the FunMat-II competence center funded by VINNOVA (the Swedish Agency for Innovation Systems) in materials science and surface technology at Linköping University with partners at Uppsala University, the research institute Swerea KIMAB, and numerous Swedish and international industry partners. At Linköping University, the Divisions of Nanostructured Materials, Thin Film Physics, and Theoretical Physics participate.

As postdoc, you will principally carry out research. A certain amount of teaching may be part of your duties, up to a maximum of 20% of working hours.

The workplace
You will be employed in the the unit of Materials Design and Informatics at the department of Theoretical Physics at the Institution of Physics, Chemistry and Biology (IFM).

Qualifications
To be qualified to take employment as postdoc, you must have been awarded a doctoral degree or have a foreign degree that is deemed to be equivalent to a doctoral degree. This degree must have been awarded at the latest by the point at which LiU makes its decision to employ you. The doctorate (or equivalent) should be in computational physics or similar.

It is considered advantageous if your doctoral degree is no older than three years at application deadline for this job. If there are special reasons for having an older doctoral degree - such as taking statutory leave - then these may be taken into consideration.

The applicant must have several published papers in highly regarded journals, with some on the topic of high-throughput computation or machine learning of materials. Experience with programming is necessary. Especially, high programming skills in using the language Python is required. Therefore, the application should include a description of the level of programming in general, and specifically in Python, with concrete examples of software that the applicant has written or contributed to. Contributions to publicly available program code (e.g., in open source projects) are meriting, and if available, links to such contributions should be included in the application. Experience with theoretical methods for electronic structure simulations with focus on investigations of elastic properties, lattice vibrations and thermodynamic stability of systems is highly beneficial.

Great emphasis will also be placed on personal qualities and suitability, such as the ability to work in team, collaborate with PhD students, accuracy, flexibility and speed. You should be inventive and have an independent attitude.
