Information about the department and the division

The Department of Mathematical Sciences at Chalmers University of Technology and the University of Gothenburg has about 200 employees, and is the largest department of mathematics in Sweden. The department has three scientific divisions: Algebra and Geometry, Analysis and Probability Theory, and Applied Mathematics and Statistics and conducts successful research in pure and applied mathematics and mathematical statistics in a wide range of research areas. We have an international environment with frequent exchanges with other universities around the world. The department provides a friendly, creative, and supportive atmosphere with a steady flow of international guests. There are many committed teachers with extensive and broad experience of all aspects of higher education. More information about us can be found on our website: http://www.chalmers.se/math

At the division of Applied Mathematics and Statistics we conduct research within the theory and implementation of finite element methods, inverse wave propagation problems, stochastic partial differential equations, geometric numerical integration, fluid dynamics, optimization, biostatistics, spatial modeling, Bayesian inference, high-dimensional data, large-scale computational methods, and bioinformatics. The division is also expanding in the area of data science and machine learning.

Our department continuously strives to be an attractive employer. Equality and diversity are substantial foundations in all our activities. We work actively to be a parent-friendly organization.

Project description

We will recruit one postdoc in mathematics to work under the supervision of Klas Modin with a project on geometric numerical hydrodynamics funded by the Swedish Research Council (VR).

The project includes components of differential geometry, partial differential equations (PDE), and computational mathematics. Depending on the candidate, there might also be elements of stochastic analysis and/or statistical mechanics. Experience in any of these fields is meritorious.

For more details on the research, see https://klasmodin.github.io.

Major responsibilities

You will be employed for two years at the Department of Mathematical Sciences. Your major responsibility as postdoc is to perform your own research in a research group. You are expected to develop your own ideas and communicate scientific results orally as well as in written form. As a post-doctoral researcher, you are expected to work independently and to be able to supervise/co-supervise Master's and PhD students. The teaching of undergraduate students may also be included to a small extent. Another important aspect involves collaboration within academia and with society at large. The position is meritorious for future research duties within academia as well as industry/the public sector.

Qualifications

Applicants must have a strong background in mathematics. You must have obtained a PhD degree in mathematics or applied mathematics, or expect to complete such a degree by September 1, 2023. (Your doctoral degree can not be awarded more than three years prior to the application deadline - according to the current agreement with the Swedish Agency for Government Employers).

Experience in some of the following areas is meritorious: numerical analysis, differential geometry, computational methods for differential equations, fluid dynamics, geometric mechanics, Hamiltonian dynamics, statistical mechanics.

Programming skills in Python and/or Fortran are a requirement. Experience with cluster computing is meritorious.

Good communication skills in oral and written English, excellent presentation skills, and fluency in English are required.

You should include all relevant work in your application such as articles and your PhD thesis (provide an English summary if necessary) that you have authored or co-authored.

Contract terms

This postdoc position is a full-time temporary employment for two years.
