Join us at the Division of Applied Chemistry, Department of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, and help advance knowledge in the field of molecular characterization of cellulose-based and pharmaceutical materials.
In this postdoctoral project, chemically modified cellulose fibers and pharmaceutical formulations are the focus. The aim is to adapt and develop methods in solid-state DNP-NMR spectroscopy for studying heterogeneity and radial depth distribution of modifications in intact fibers, as well as structural complexity in amorphous solid dispersions of pharmaceutical relevance.
About us
You will be based at the Division of Applied Chemistry at the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, and work closely with the Swedish NMR Centre. The position is part of FibRe, a VINNOVA competence centre that brings together Chalmers, KTH, AstraZeneca, Nouryon, and other partners
Project overview
The project addresses the need to develop characterization techniques that can resolve heterogeneity in chemically modified cellulose fibers and in pharmaceutical formulations. The objective is to establish NMR-based methods that quantify radial modification profiles and heterogeneity, and to relate these to macroscopic properties such as swelling, water uptake, and thermoprocessability. Pharmaceutical formulations serve as structurally analogous systems, enabling transfer of methodological advances between different classes of soft matter. The postdoctoral position is a full-time, two-year employment.
Who we are looking for
The most important qualification is a strong motivation to apply and develop DNP-NMR spectroscopy for studying chemically modified cellulose fibers and pharmaceutical formulations. You have a Master's degree in science or engineering - in chemistry, physics, or equivalent, and a doctoral degree (awarded no more than three years prior to the application deadline*) where NMR spectroscopy has been the central theme. Solid-state NMR experience is particularly meriting. You enjoy experimental research and the application of theoretical tools from a physical chemistry perspective.
You need to have strong written and verbal communication skills in English.
• The date on your doctoral degree certificate is considered the official date of completion. Exceptions to the three-year eligibility limit may be made for documented circumstances such as parental leave, sick leave, or military service.
What you will do
• Develop and apply DNP-enhanced solid-state NMR methods for depth-resolved analysis of chemically modified cellulose fibers.
• Study structural heterogeneity in pharmaceutical formulations as complementary model systems.
• Integrate experimental work with spin-diffusion modeling and other complementary techniques.
• Collaborate actively with AstraZeneca (model systems and analytical input), Nouryon (chemically modified fibers and industrial context), and KTH (cross-validation and imaging).
• Work primarily at Chalmers and the Swedish NMR Centre in Gothenburg, with regular interaction across academic and industrial partners
Contract terms
The position is a temporary full-time employment for two years.
The position requires physical presence throughout the entire employment. A valid residence permit must be presented by the start date, otherwise the offer may be withdrawn.
What we offer
• As a postdoc at Chalmers, you are an employee and enjoy all employee benefits. Read more about working at Chalmers and our benefits for employees.
• A dynamic and inspiring working environment in the coastal city of Gothenburg.
• Read more about Sweden's generous parental leave, subsidized day care, free schools, healthcare etc at Move To Gothenburg.
Chalmers is dedicated to improving gender balance and actively works with equality projects, such as the GENIE Initiative for gender equality and excellence.
If Swedish is not your native language, Chalmers offers Swedish courses to help you settle in.
Application procedure
The application should be written in English be attached as PDF-files, as below. Maximum size for each file is 40 MB. Please note that the system does not support Zip files.
CV
• A comprehensive CV, including a complete list of publications.
• Details of previous teaching and pedagogical experience.
Personal letter
• A brief introduction about yourself.
• A summary of your previous research fields and key research outcomes.
