Project title
Using X-ray absorption spectroscopy and chemical extractions to determine metal speciation in bedrock fractures and estuaries.
The research project
Focus is on geochemical characterization and process understanding in the boreal landscape, including fractured crystalline rock and catchment/estuarine systems. Of prime interest are the rare earth elements and a suite of redox-sensitive metals including Fe, Mn and S. The main analytical techniques will be sequential chemical extractions and X-ray absorption spectroscopy, combined with traditional techniques like SEM and XRD. A major task is to characterize the oxidation state, mineral phases, and isotopic composition of Fe in secondary (fracture) minerals throughout the upper kilometer of the earth's crust. The Äspö Hard Rock Laboratory (HRL), located close to the Linnaeus University, is an ideal site for these studies. Another task is to characterize the partitioning and fate of Fe, Mn and rare earth elements in estuarine systems, particularly the mechanisms leading to coagulation along pH gradients. Catchments in the vicinity of the Äspö HRL and other catchments elsewhere affected by acidic soils are ideal locations for these studies.
Requirements
Applicants shall have a Ph.D (no older than 3 years prior to the deadline for this application) in environmental or geological sciences, experience in carrying out sequential chemical extractions and X-ray absorption spectroscopy, and be familiar with modeling of complex geochemical data, and have knowledge of the geology and geochemistry of bedrock and estuaries.
Other criteria
Strong communication and writing skills (English) are essential.
Duration and location
The position is 2 years (100%) and located in Kalmar and at the Äspö Hard Rock Laboratory, Sweden.
