Department of Animal Breeding and Genetics:

The Department is based at Ultuna Campus, Uppsala, and has 55 co-workers. Our vision is "Better use of genetic resources". We perform research in molecular, quantitative and applied genetics, and bioinformatics, across a range of livestock species and companion animals. We also contribute to several education programs at SLU, and provide international genetic evaluation services for cattle through the Interbull Centre. More information at https://www.slu.se/en/departments/animalgenetics/.

Project description:

We are recruiting an accomplished post-doc in animal breeding and genetics to join our department. The post-doc will mainly work within the project 'Genomic selection for more efficient beef breeding', aiming to establish Swedish reference populations for the two most common beef breeds (Charolais and Hereford), and develop a framework to estimate genomic enhanced breeding values based on these reference populations and single-step methods. In the project we strive for future international collaborations, both in research and for genomic evaluations, and to improve the competitiveness and profitability of Swedish beef producers.

Duties:
The project work will be done in close collaboration with the project leader, representatives from the breeding organisations Växa Sverige and VikingGenetics, and breed associations. The position will give you the opportunity to be involved in the development of beef breeding on a Nordic and international level. You will participate in the selection and collection of DNA-samples, in editing and in analyses of field-recorded phenotype and pedigree data as well as genomic information. You will compare different models for single-step genomic selection. In the project we will also survey literature on known genes of importance for qualitative traits. You will be given the opportunity to further add to your academic merits by contributing to one or more other projects at the department. You will write manuscripts for submission to peer-reviewed journals, and give presentations directed both to the scientific community and to stakeholders. Depending on qualifications and interest, there will be possibilities to contribute to teaching and supervision of students. The post offers access to training courses for both personal and professional development.

Qualifications:
You hold a PhD in Animal Breeding, or a comparable subject, with demonstrable experience of working with livestock data and with genomic selection or a comparable field. Good skills in English (both written and oral) are required.

The ability to understand and speak Swedish or another Scandinavian language is meriting. Experience in working with genomic selection and cattle breeding will be considered a strong merit. Because of the close collaboration with stakeholders in the project, emphasis will also be placed on good social skills. The ability to work both in teams and independently and to show initiative will also be considered as merits for this position, as well as previous scientific publications.

The PhD degree must have been completed no more than three years before the end of the application period. If there are special reasons, the doctoral degree may have been passed earlier. Special reasons include leave due to illness, parental leave, clinical service, trust assignments within trade unions or other similar circumstances.
