Duties:
We seek a post doc to work within a research project funded by FORMAS that studies where and why Arctic charr (Salvelinus alpinus) is declining and that develops management strategies for the preservation and sustainable use of Arctic charr populations.
Key objectives of the project are to first combine existing individual and population level data with data on environmental drivers to elucidate mechanisms behind where, how and why Arctic charr populations change over time. Secondly, the project will identify critical species interactions and environmental factors that determine the population characteristics of Arctic charr, and relate these to ongoing environmental change.
Depending on the candidates' main interests, there will be opportunities for both fieldwork and theoretical populations modelling, but also possibilities to focus more on management related research.
The main supervisor for the post-doctoral researcher will be Karin Nilsson (Department of Wildlife, Fish and Environmental Studies, SLU Umeå). The work will be carried out in collaboration will other researchers, including Gunnar Öhlund (SLU Umeå), Pär Byström (Umeå University) and Kerstin Holmgren (SLU Aqua). Collaboration with county boards, Sami villages, and other stake holders is a crucial part of the project.
Qualifications:
We seek a highly motivated candidate who is able to take own initiatives and work both independently and in a group.
Knowledge in the topics of population dynamics, fish ecology and food web ecology are highly desirable. Skills in working with larger datasets are meriting. Experience in population modelling, especially with stage- and or size-structured models, is a merit but not a requirement.
Applicants should hold a doctoral degree in ecology, environmental science or the equivalent. Excellent skills in written and oral communication in English are required. In the selection process, special weight will be given to the applicant's research skills, as demonstrated by the quality of the applicant's PhD thesis, published scientific articles and other scientific merits. Special weight will also be given to the applicant's knowledge in experimental design and statistics, and the applicant's experience in conducting experiments and investigations in aquatic environments.
As postdoctoral appointments are career-developing positions for junior researchers, we are primarily looking for candidates obtained a doctoral degree within the last three years.
