PhD Student Position in Drinking Water Engineering, Chalmers University of Technology
Reference number 2008/134
Application deadline 2008-09-15
The department of Civil and Environmental Engineering has now a PhD student position open.
Project title
"New" microbiological methods and hydrodynamic models applicable for a more reliable drinking water supply in a changing climate.
Job description
With advanced hydrodynamic models and improved microbial analysis methods the project aims at a better description of spread and transport of microorganisms in raw water used for drinking water. This will provide a better basis for decisions on protection from water-borne diseases through drinking water consumption than today. The project is in the intersection between the research areas of raw water management and microbiology. A microbiological module, built-in to the hydrodynamic flow model, will be developed and provide an applied tool for water producers to carry out integrated risk analysis of the entire supply system. The raw water source is the most important sub-systems in risk analysis since the largest threats come from discharges within the catchment, especially microbial pathogens. Alternative DNA based analysis methods will be used to detect and quantify bacteria relevant for risk assessment of infectious matter, e.g. FISH and PCR. These will be compared to routine measurements of indicator bacteria and will be tested for their ability to discriminate between faecal contaminants from animals and wastewater systems, so called source tracking.
About 20% of the working time will be devoted to duties at the department, mainly undergraduate teaching in hydraulics. The remaining time will be devoted to research education, where the aim is to complete a PhD examination in 5 years (nominal time without department duties is 4 years).
Qualifications
A successful applicant should have a solid educational background in hydraulics and hydrology and basic drinking water technology. Suitable background is a MSc. in Civil and Environmental Engineering, or equivalent. Microbiological skills or knowledge is beneficial but not mandatory. The candidate will be working in an interdisciplinary research group where he/she needs to work independently driving the specific project and at the same time be able to co-operate closely with researchers within the group. The candidate should have an interest in teaching activities since the hydrodynamic research is closely linked to our courses in hydraulics.
Application procedure
The material included in the application shall consist of pdf or zipped documents:
1. An application of a maximum of one A4 page containing your specific qualifications for the position
2. Attested copies of education certificates, including grade reports and other documents
3. Curriculum Vitae
4. Letters of recommendation from academic institutions and/or previous employers (optional)
The application can be submitted electronically, use the button at the end of this page.
If any material is not available electronically or cannot be transferred to pdf format, the material can be sent as a hard copy to Registrar. The applicants name and the reference number (2008/134) must be written on the first page of the application.
