Metabolomics represents an exciting area of research with a wide range of important applications ranging from understanding human disease, mechanism of microbial infection to understanding the developmental stages in trees. We have developed methods for metabolomics analysis using optimized extraction protocols, and a novel semi-automated data-processing system. This allows us to track changes in hundreds of metabolites, covering all major metabolic pathways. We primarily use mass spectrometry coupled with GC or LC separation systems, i.e. gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS)- and liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry (LC/MS)-based metabolomics.
In this project, the Ph.D. candidate will develop new strategies and tools for data processing and modeling of metabolomics data. This is critical for metabolite identification and visualization of results in metabolic pathways and metabolic networks. This project is based on multi-disciplinary collaboration, therefore the Ph.D. student needs to be skilled in both oral and written communication in English, be able to work independently as well as in collaboration with others. The candidate also needs to have a genuine interest, not necessarily documented knowledge, in working with computers and programming, e.g. in Matlab or R.
The Ph.D. candidate will be part of Computational Life Science Cluster (CLiC) at Umeå University which is an ongoing effort to further stimulate and advance computer based modeling, tools and strategies in experimental sciences.
Prerequisites: The recruitment procedure will follow the Higher Education Ordinance (“Högskoleförordningen†Chapters 5 and 7). Prerequisites include either i) 240 ECTS credits (swe. Högskolepoäng) of higher education studies of which 60 should be on an advanced level (Master level) in chemistry or similar relevant field, or ii) 120 Swedish (old) credits (swe. Poäng; corresponding to 180 ECTS credits) of higher education studies if they were taken before July 1, 2007 or equivalent competence
