PhD student position in Energy and environmental systems analysis of maritime transport

We invite applicants to join our team of researchers within the area of energy and environmental systems analysis focusing on the transition towards a sustainable transport sector. We are looking for a PhD student focusing on future fuels and propulsion systems for the maritime sector. This is an opportunity for you to contribute to the development of techno-economic and environmental assessment evaluation frameworks and/or the development of energy system optimization models. The research is applied and closely linked to industrial interests and needs.

About the research
Our research aims to provide long-term, and most often global, perspectives on future renewable fuels for transport. We seek to rigorously analyse the feasibility of energy transitions, utilize empirical as well as estimated data, and explore whether and under what conditions changes can occur as well as the cost-effectiveness and environmental effects of such changes. Research tools include techno-economic assessments, environmental assessment tools, and cost-minimizing models, where all energy sectors compete for the same primary energy sources in a future carbon constrained world. Currently, we have a special interest in the decarbonization of the maritime sector.

The position is located at the Division of Transport Energy and Environment. You will be joining Maria Grahn and Selma Brynolf's research team, presently consisting of three senior researchers, three postdocs and three PhD students. It is embedded in an interdisciplinary environment where we have close collaboration with other research teams at Chalmers such as technology experts, systems engineers, natural and social scientists carrying out research on solutions to major environmental challenges. We also collaborate with international organizations within both academia and industry.

Project overview

You will start working in the project "Potential for electrifying ships from a fleet perspective - understanding power demand and grid capacity". You can read more here: https://research.chalmers.se/en/project/11699. The task is to develop a new energy system model for ship electrification for all ships entering the port of Gothenburg and connect the model to electricity grid models to understand both limitations on the ship side as well as on the shore side. In this project you will collaborate with at least two other divisions at Chalmers: Marine Technology (Zhiyuan Li) and Energy Technology (Maria Taljegård).

Main responsibilities

• Plan and perform research under the guidance of supervisors
• Apply and develop energy- and environmental systems assessment methods and tools
• Collect and analyse empirical data
• Write research articles and other publications
• Present research at conferences and to relevant stakeholders
• Collaborate with researchers, industry professionals, and other PhD students
• Take courses at an advanced level within the Graduate School Shipping and Marine Technology with a specialization in Energy and Environmental Systems Assessment
• Assist with the department's teaching including supervision of bachelor and master theses.

Your profile
We seek candidates with the following qualifications:

• A master's level degree in a relevant field such as industrial ecology, energy technology, or applied mathematics, with a specialization in energy systems analysis, or energy economics.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills in English.

The following experience will strengthen your application:

• Proven experience with data analysis and programming (e.g., GAMS, Matlab, Python or R).
• 7.5 credit course (or more) in sustainable energy futures
• Experience of other energy and environmental systems assessment tools, e.g. life cycle assessment
• Speaking and writing in Swedish

Terms of employment
The PhD studentship begins with an initial one-year employment. The total duration of the position is limited to a maximum of 4.5 to 5 years, depending on the extent of teaching and departmental duties performed during the appointment.
