PhD student in Space Physics
The Solar System Physics and Space Technology research programme at the Swedish Institute of Space Physics in Kiruna invites applications for a PhD student position in Space Physics, related to the ESA Rosetta mission to a comet.
After more than 10 years in space, the ESA Rosetta spacecraft is about to arrive at its target, comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko. In this unique mission the spacecraft will accompany the comet as it approaches the sun and its activity gradually increases. An opportunity is now open to work with the new exciting data as it arrives from the comet. Applications are invited for a PhD student position to study ion dynamics in the vicinity of a comet, using data from our mass resolving ion spectrometer ICA and the other plasma instruments on board Rosetta.
The PhD student will participate in the data processing of the new data from the comet and may participate in the operation of the instrument. Many phenomena will be studied, but tentatively the PhD student will work with the pick-up of cometary ions by the solar wind and the gradual formation of plasma boundaries in the comet magnetosphere. The initial work may also involve data from Mars and Venus Express, as the IRF ion instruments on these missions are nearly identical to our instrument on Rosetta.
The applicant is expected to have a MSc, or comparable academic degree, in physics. Experience in scientific computing and knowledge of space physics is desirable. The PhD student should start during 2014, and will be enrolled at either Umeå University or Luleå University of Technology and must therefore fulfill the university requirements for a PhD student. The position is in Kiruna and provides salary for four years of study, funded by the Swedish National Space Board.
